Buffalo trade looming? 'Anything is possible!'

Been getting some questions flying my way today on a possible Buffalo trade rumour in light of speculation they are in discussions with a couple teams and one being the Edmonton Oilers.

Let's be straight up, I have not heard Grigorenko's name used at all, only who could it be the Oilers could trade for and what do they give up. So since everyone is speculating let's have some fun and look at some possibilities.

1.Ryan Miller
2.Thomas Vanek
3.Some 3rd or 4th line player
4. Mikhail Grigorenko

Let's cover each one....
1. Ryan Miller? While it is always possible, unless Dubynk is going to Buffalo I do not see this happening. We can't have 3 Goaltenders here and Miller has a high cap this year and we are running out of space. The only possibility if MacT was interested would be a trade something like Ales Hemsky, Martin Marincin and Dubynk for Ryan Miller. The trade off would be 8.5 M in NHL salary to Buffalo and 7M in NHL salary to Edmonton. Marincin is the price to to pay to unload the salary and get a more established goalie. * For those doubters of Miller, he is still a top 10 Goalie in this league IMO but do not think he would want to come to Edmonton with his NMC.

2. Thomas Vanek? After Edmonton pushed up his value on the RFA Market, he is now being made available in their rebuild. A awesome player but not sure the Oilers can afford this player without sending some cash away. Again any possible trade means money out and that requires a team adding something extra to help compensate. Possibility could be Hemsky, Jones, a prospect like Marincin or even Gernat along with a 2nd rd pick in 2014. Not likely to happen for a 1 year contract but again does it matter if the oilers can afford even 1 year and give up little?

3. 3rd or 4th line player? Take your pick but I highly doubt the Sabres are interested in a player like Hemsky for a single year at his price tag. Unless they are shedding salary for salary, it is highly unlikely.

4. Grigorenko? This could be a interesting twist. The Oilers liked what they saw in Grigorenko when he came to town to visit before the draft, the scouts liked him but Nail and Ryan were no brainers when it came to 1st OV picks. But with so much talent coming up the ranks in Buffalo, they could afford to unload him for the right price. Buffalo was not pleased with his progress last year offensively but are we not talking about the same coach Ruff who many Oiler fans feel mishandled Hall at the World Championships? This trade makes sense from many view points? But to make this a fair trade what would Edmonton need to give up. Remember Buffalo is rebuilding and earlier in their stages. Maybe Lander, Marincin and a 3rd round 2014 draft pick? Is that over payment or under payment?

This is ALL speculation but should these 2 GM's talk trade, it would make for some very interesting news.

in the meantime, keep your stick on the ice!

Daily News & Rumors (Gainey/Sutton/Colaiacovo/Whitney)

First off, I would like to wish the Oilers luck tonight in their matchup against the Coyotes.  It should be a low scoring game (every Oilers game is).

According to Chris Botta of Islanderspointblank.com, the New York Islanders are receiving calls on Defenseman Andy Sutton. It is unknown if they are willing to trade him.

Canadiens GM Bob Gainey has stepped down as GM of the Montreal Canadiens, Pierre Gauthier will take over.

According to Andy Strickland the St. Louis Blues have made it known that Defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo is available.

According to Adrian Dater, Defenseman John Michael Liles will be a healthy scratch yet again. It is believed that the Colorado Avalanche are currently shopping him.

It looks like there are several teams still interested in former Oiler Ray Whitney.  It appears the Kings, Bruins, Sabres and Flyers are leading the way.

BEERS

Patrick O'Sullivan - He played hard and tried his ass off.  He seems to like to ring them off the post.  But after what seemed liked a million chances, he finally scores on a nice play by Visnovsky and a nice pass by Hemsky.  He was good enough to deserve a beer.  How about a frosty glass of Pilsner? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (He's getting the total snub right now.  He's the best at faceoffs this game and only plays 11:50.  He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots plus the 64% faceoffs.  Sounds like a good game to me.), Sam Gagner (He played well again.  He tried his ass off and Quinn kept putting him out there.  The good, he had 3 shots and created chances.  The bad, 18% faceoffs.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He looked way better than yesterday.  He made some good plays and had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots.  His assist was a lucky one that you need to see on the game highlights.), Ales Hemsky (He looked pretty good.  He had flashes of brilliance, but that's all that it was... flashes. He made a nice pass to Sully for the Oilers only goal.), Steve Staios (He was decent two games in a row.  What's going on here? His only black mark was his penalty in the 3rd.), Dustin Penner (I liked his hustle. He had a few chances but had a standout 0% faceoffs. What?)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - A 5 minute Power Play and you don't score? What hell guys?  That's like a free all you can eat lunch buffet and you forgot your plate.  I didn't count the chances you guys blew on that, but I'd bet it wasn't that many.  Nice passing, but shoot the puck.  Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ryan Potulny (He looked lost and confused.  He ended up on the -2 line.  Yet he gets more ice time than Brule. Go figure?), Jason Strudwick (His best part of the game was his 5 blocked shots.  Unfortunately, that's all he can do well.  Not a good game by him tonight.)  Ethan Moreau (He takes the BTP and I guess we shouldn't expect less from him.)
-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He was not good at all.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He's hurt and never played.

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - I was bored for most of the game and I was waiting for some great action to happen. Even after Reddox was nailed there was no emotion.  The team looked flat and was possibly tired. But no matter, the effort could have been better.  Grebeshkov hurt his knee on the collision late in the 3rd and he's flown back to Edmonton for examination.  How many more people are going to get hurt?  Stop the madness hockey gods.  STOP IT!  With some rest and a few practices, I'm sure the Oilers will be a little better on Sunday.  *fingers crossed*  GOILERS!

Paq Twinn - That was a game, it wasn't good, it wasn't bad. I'm starting to get tired of hearing " I hope so and so is going to be ok". MacArthur should be suspended for his cheap hit on Reddox. When are players going to stop running each other. Being sorry afterwards just doesn't cut it anymore. Nice to see Patty-O bury one. The Oilers need more from him. He's been playing well, just limited goal production. I can't wait for Souray to come back, maybe then the PP will be more consistant. Average 1st period, good 2nd, and an average 3rd. Outshot the Sabres but needed more hits. Overall game grade: C-.

Beers and Jeers #24 (Jan 27/09 vs. Buffalo Sabres)

Well that was one of the most crappiest starts that I have ever seen. 1st goal in 10 seconds?!? 2nd goal a minute later!?! 3-0 by the 10:00 minute mark. This is the 1st period still. And it's Buffalo in the lead. Way to go guys! The Oilers couldn't even score on the couple of Power Play chances that they had. This team fell flat and it's going to be hard to get back up. The best part of the 1st period was when Roli was pulled and Deslauriers came in and actually made a save. (Although I don't pin the crap start entirely on Roli) The crowd responded with a cheer. So what went wrong? Staios was terrible. Falling and giving the puck away like a peewee hockey player. By far the worst Oiler. In fact that period alone is getting him a nice brand new shiny Boo. Hemsky was the best Oiler, if you can even say that.

And how do we start the 2nd? Pissed off and mean? Maybe a fight? No. Buffalo scores. Again. And again. And again. Well you get the picture. Not a good night in paradise. 7-1 for the Sabres after the 2nd. Erik Cole tried to give the team some life by scoring a nice wrister. But to no avail. Deslauriers didn't fair any better. Not a good night to be an Oiler goalie.

The 3rd was just as stinky. At points you wonder to yourself why am I still watching this? Because I have to. The team needs us. (I feel a little responsible here. We were 5w - 1 L since I bought my new hat. But... I had to cut my mullet because it was just to shaggy. I think I screwed the team. I should never have cut my hair.)

So all in all that was a terrible game. There was a few bright spots. Erik Cole was not bad. He did look a little lost without Gagner. Hemsky wasn't bad either. But I don't think that anyone deserves a beer tonight. But I am sure I can round up some Jeers though.

------------------------------------------

The Lines Tonight

Penner Horcoff Hemsky (Hemmer was a one man show. Horcoff won faceoffs but then that's it. Penner was Penner. Lazy)

Nilsson Cogliano Cole (Cole and Nilsson seemed good. Cogs seemed out of place with those two. Maybe Gagner is important to this team?)

Moreau Pouliot Reddox (The dynamic MacT shut down line. Awesome! But they didn't shut anyone down. So what good were they?)

Strudwick Brodziak Stortini (Stortini was the best on this line. Brodziak played an awkward game. He just didn't look comfortable. I barely noticed Strudwick)

-----------------------------------------

FINAL SCORE

SABRES - 10

OILERS - 2

------------------------------------------

BEERS

There is none.

-----------------------------------------

JEERS

Steve Staios

- This guy was a real terrible hockey player tonight. Bad plays. Falling all over the place. Chasing guys around. The stats don't really show what I seen, but Steve Staios was bad tonight. Very bad. Boooooooooooooo!

Shawn Horcoff

- At $7 million next season, a game like this isn't going to cut it. As a leader of this team you can not afford to have nights where you are not noticable. Unfortunately for the fans and the team, this has happened a lot this year. I hope a change is in order here. You suck Horcoff. (Except for your faceoffs tonight. That was good) Boooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The rest of the Edmonton Oilers

- BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

----------------------------------------

See you all Friday. If I pay for that game and it turns out to be like this one I... I... damn it. I will still get the next one. "sigh"
