THE MEAT AND POTATOES

Game Notes:

- The Oilers started the game on fire. Then by the halfway through the first it was all Kings. The Kings really applied the pressure on the Oilers. But, the 1st ended 1-0 for the Oilers despite being out-shot by the Kings.

- The 2nd period still wasn't good for the Oilers. The Kings again came out ready to beat the Oilers. Despite taking a ton of shots at Dubnyk, they couldn't score. The Oilers did however. It was 2-0 after the 2nd period was over.

- Even though the Oilers again scored early in the 3rd, the Kings were still taking it to them. Bam! Bam! It`s a 3-2 game. Bam! Now it's a 3-3 tie game. Holy crap! It was looking like the Oilers were going to implode once again, but the game went to overtime.

- Overtime settled nothing and the shootout was next. Potulny and Horcoff score to win it for the Oilers.

The Good:

- Devan Dubnyk was really good tonight. He faced 55 shots and had a shutout going into the 3rd period. I decided just for fun to see who people would choose. So I asked the people that were around for the TweetCast who they would keep if they had to pick, Dubnyk or Deslauriers. 10 people chose Dubnyk and 1 chose Deslauriers. I was one of the 10 that picked DD.

- Mike Comrie was the man tonight. Partly because Hillary Duff was at the game. He ALWAYS plays well when she is there. With 2 goals on 3 shots, I'd say Mike was on fire, or just a show off. I wonder if the Oilers are going to bring him back for another year? I don't think I'd be opposed to it. For a guy who I hated so much, I no longer have that hate for Mike.

- Tom Gilbert is easily the most improved player in the last half of the season. Ever since Ryan Whitney came into his life, he's be terrific. He scores a goal and has 2 assists tonight and led the team with 4 blocked shots. That's a great effort on his part.

- Ryan Whitney is slowing becoming one of my Jib cutters. He's a real key cog in helping Gilbert turn the page. He had 2 assists and was +2 tonight.

- Marc Pouliot was the best at faceoffs tonight at 50%. Other than that, he did squat.

- The "New Bash Brothers" Arsene and Johnson were pretty dominant in the hitting department. Johnson had 5 hits and Arsene had 4 hits.

The Not So Good:

- The Oilers were out-shot 55-16. I can not believe they won a game while getting destroyed in shots.

- The Chorney/Strudwick train wreck was in full force tonight. Chorney made a weak pass on his first shift and never looked back. Both guys ended up -2 each. I don't want either one of these guys back.

- The play that caused the penalty shot that Whitney took was bad. He gave the puck away at the Kings bklueline and then rushed back and grabbed Modin and hauled him down in front of DD. Good thing Dubnyk saved that penalty shot.

The Side Dish:

- The Edmonton Oilers website has a draft simulator. Try it here. It's kind of fun.

- The Springfield Falcons lost in a 7-5 game to the Wolf Pack. Click here for the recap.

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Jeff Deslauries was really, really good. He kept this team in this game. Jeff has been better than I had expected this season.

- Pouliot was a work horse. He played pretty good. He was one guy who I seen all game and not for bad stuff either.

- Ryan Whitney is making me a believer. He's been great. Tonight he was pushy, angry and very aware. He was making some real great passes and was on the ice for both Oiler goals.

- Tom Gilbert also played pretty good. He picked up two assists on the Oilers only two goals. I even seen him push a guy down. I know. Shocking.

- I thought that Aaron Johnson was also pretty solid. He laid out some hard and heavy hits and he's looking like he fits in on this squad.

- Dustin Penner didn't really play well all game, but he did score his 29th goal of the season and that makes me happy. One more for 30.

- With only 7:36 of ice time, Ryan Jones didn't accomplish much. He did score the tying goal though. So that's something right?

- Andrew Cogliano played with Penner again this game and he picked up an assist on Penner's goal.

- Dean Arsene had 5 hits and played pretty good.

The Not So Good:

- This was a boring game. Even the overtime and shootout had no drama. UGH! Glad this train wreck is almost over.

- The Oilers take this game to a shootout. Tom Gilbert is the best choice? 8 rounds of shootout and no Cogliano? Strange.

- Mike Comrie is the natural center on his line yet, Zack Stortini was playing center. With Comrie not wanting to make concessions to improve the team, that is reason enough for me to not want him back next season.

- Strudwick and Chorney were their usual terrible selves. Both were burned by being on the ice for both Coyote goals.

- Shawn Horcoff made some bad plays and wasn't really that good. Maybe he's just tired of the crap like the rest of us?

The Side Dish:

- The Falcons only had one goal in a 6-1 loss. Eberle was the guy to score. Recap here.

- The Thunder were losing 4-1 at the time of this recap. Recap to follow.

- Hall vs Seguin recap is here.

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Jeff Deslauriers was good. He made some big saves (37 in total) and gave the Oilers hope when the game was looking bleak. He played hard and the team didn't give him much help once the Ducks got going in the 3rd.

- Gilbert Brule played himself a good game. He was everywhere and tried to make an impact on every shift he was out. He had 5 shots on goal and scored with one of them. He's definitely a bright spot on next years team.

- Ryan Whitney was hungry to show the Ducks what they gave up on. I think with his 2 assists and 27:08 in ice time, he did just that. He even got into it with Troy Bodie (a former Oiler prospect) and showed a lot of piss and vinegar. I am really liking the cut of his jib.

- Instead of hating him, I liked Marc Pouliot tonight.

- I liked the passion from Dean Arsene. His rough treatment on Bobby Ryan and then the mercy fight with Mike Brown (he was killed in that fight), was good to see from an Oiler defenceman.

- I thought Mike Comrie had a good game. He didn't score, but he made some great plays and had 4 shots.

- Tom Gilbert never ceases to amaze me lately. He played 25:17 and didn't make a lot of mistakes. He also picked up an assist.

- Patrick O'Sullivan was back in the lineup. He was pretty solid and it looked like his finger didn't hurt him that much.

The Not So Good:

- I miss Visnovsky.

- I don't know how many times Kevin Quinn said "601" in reference to Teemu Selanne being at 600 goals, but it got old real quick.

- Once again the 2009/10 Edmonton Oilers team blows a game in the 3rd period. Even with endless Power Plays, they were out-skilled and outplayed by the Ducks. The 3rd period started as a 1-1 tie game and it got going at the 10 minute mark, for the Ducks. Then with two minutes left they turn it on and get some real good chances or a goal like tonight. It's this aspect of the Oilers game that I really hope they change for next season. I really do not like it.

- And to top it off, the game was boring for the first 50 minutes.

- TheCaptainEthanMoreau had 3 giveaways and had enough ice time that he should have accomplished more than he did. How is this guy NOT in Springfield with the Falcons? Seriously.

The Side Dish:

- The Springfield Falcons lost to the Lowell Devils 4-3 in the shootout. Jordan Eberle picked up an assist and scored a goal in the shootout during the loss. Eberle has at least one point in every game he's played with the Falcons so far this year.

- The Stockton Thunder also played tonight. Recap soon.

Beers and Jeers #61 (Sept 20/09 vs. New York Islanders)

As you can see, I have made some changes to the site. I hope they are for the better. But you never know until you do it. I was acquiring to much content to stay at one column and made the change to two. I'm sure you will see some more changes in the future.

Saskatoon huh? Why Saskatoon? I'm sure there is a good reason for it, but it makes no sense to me. The Islanders are the home team on paper, but the crowd is an Oiler crowd. Again, makes no sense. But what do I know?

Lubomir Visnovsky is back in the lineup and is ready to go. Need I say more? Welcome back #71, it's been too long.

If I'm Chris Minard, I would ask management to switch my number 39 so Mike Comrie can take it. It's been stated publicly that he wanted that number. Why wait till he's sent down? Or am I just over reacting? Speaking of numbers, how did Dean Arsene get #8? Is he really going to play with the Oilers this year? Probably not.

BEERS

Jordan Eberle - I sure do like this kid. Half of me wants to see him stay and the other half knows it's for the best that he goes back to junior. I just love the way he tries hard no matter what. I like the cut of his jib. That's the kind of heart this team needs. Next year is going to be sweet to be an Oiler fan. Time for a cold one Eazy E? Cheers!

Patrick O'Sullivan - He tried hard and scored the Oilers only goal. Not really his best game at all, but worthy enough to get a beer. Quick chug this and leave. Cheers!

Lubomir Visnovsky - He played pretty solid for his 1st game back. He didn't look out of place at all, except for the 1st period. It sure was nice to see him speed around again. He was the best Oiler on the ice. Feel like a cold beer? Cheers!

Steve MacIntyre - He had a heck of a fight with Joel Rechlicz. They battled the last time they played each other and it was expected that they would go again. They didn't disappoint. Big Mac killed him for the 1st half of the fight landing some huge bombs. But Rechlicz caught a second wind and started to make a comeback landing his own big bombs. By the end of the fight they were so exhausted that the refs stepped in to stop it. Definitely worthy of a frosty beer. Cheers!

Honorable Mentions: Taylor Chorney (If not for Strudwick, I'd bet that spot would be for this guy.) Dean Arsene (Where did this guy come from? He's a pretty reliable player. Not many mistakes.)

-------------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - That's two games in a row where the Oilers players don't look like they want to make the team this year. There are a few exceptions. But as a whole, Quinn can't be happy with these last two games. I'm sure more cuts will be made tomorrow. Two losses in a row. Booooooo!

Marc Pouliot - His time is up. He isn't worth keeping around anymore. His lazy way to play hockey and gentle giant hitting style has cost him a spot on this team this year. Take Schremp with you. Booooooo!

Chris Minard - This guy just doesn't belong here in the NHL. Why is he not in the minors with the rest yet? Booooooooo!

Fernando Pisani - This isn't so much of a jeer, as it's more of a "what the hell man?" I still have not seen the Pisani that we have all grown to love yet in this pre-season. He has been non-noticeable and floating around. Guys like Stone are playing/trying better than you. You can't tell me Quinn doesn't notice. You better get going. Boooooo!

-------------------------

From This Game, Who Should Go Down Next?

#39 Christopher Minard (Not NHL quality yet) & #64 Milan Kytnar (Not ready yet. Was rocked a few times)

-------------------------

This arena had the best music that I've heard so far in pre-season and it's a junior arena. Take notice Oilers. It's refreshing. They played some Metallica which was cool. I even heard some cowbells in the crowd. That's how you know your in Saskatchewan, cowbells ringing.

Even Rod Phillips was getting frustrated during the 2nd period after watching the Oilers get worked over by the Islanders. "They couldn't make a play to save their lives." He talked about how crappy Chris Minard was playing. Referring to the team he says, "This is pretty disappointing." I couldn't have agreed more with Mr. Phillips. The Oilers were stinking it up and looked like an AHL team that didn't even belong in the AHL. They did score right after that outburst by Phillips though. Maybe he helped? ; ) Expect better next game. Right Quinn? Right?

Until next time...
