The Oilers Loss, Is The Barons Gain

Everyone is always sad when cuts happen after the Oilers training camp, and rightfully so. Watching a good player get cut sucks, especially if you believe he should stay.

Today is no different. Some cuts were made today like Ryan O'Marra and Teemu Hartikainen. I like both of those players and I'd like to see them full time in an Oilers uniform. But as of now, that's not going to happen.

However...

My other favorite team just gained some kick ass talent. Both players played in OKC last year and both were welcomed to the city with open arms. My friends in OKC have had nothing but good things to say about them. I'm sure they will be welcomed all over again this season too.

On a hockey side, the Barons gained 5 quality hockey players today. O'Marra, Hartikainen, Josh Green, Gilbert Brule and Ryan Keller.

Keller has proved he can play in the AHL and his experience is going to help propel the Barons into the playoffs. He showed the Oilers he can be effective and no doubt he will in OKC too.

Josh Green, the former Oiler, is a classic case of veteran leadership. He's been in the show, and he's played enough in the AHL to know how it goes. He going to help the young kids adapt to being a pro and that's valuable. If I was coach Todd Nelson, I'd give serious consideration on making Green the captain of the Barons.

There's two ways this is going to work for Gilbert Brule. Option 1, this will light a fire under his ass and he's going to lead the team in points. Tambellini says he needs to find his game, and I can't argue with that. Option 2, this demotion crushes his feeling and he fades away to the point of not being able to produce or be worth of ice time. The Stockton Thunder can use a forward.

Let's not forget that this team already has a good group down there, adding these five guys is a good thing for the Barons. Like I said. The Oilers loss... is the Barons gain.

Final Cuts Have Been Made By The Oilers

Gilbert Brule, Ryan Keller, Josh Green and Ryan O'Marra have all been put on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Oklahoma City. Teemu Hartikainen has also been sent to the Barons. Hartikainen doesn't need to be on waivers.

That spells the end for Brule with the Oilers. He played like crap during the preseason and it's deserving. I'm thinking they hope he gets picked up on waivers cause he's paid way to much to be hanging out in OKC.

With the cuts that did happen, that means that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Anton Lander and Lennart Petrell have all made the opening night roster. Quite the interesting look for the Oil. This should be an interesting year.

Gilbert Brule... So Now What?

It wasn't a secret that Gilbert Brule was in the original deal for Ryan Smyth a few days ago. Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie broke the news and for those two days, that - other than the draft stuff of course - is all we heard. Smyth for Brule and a 4th. Then it was for Brule and a 5th. Then back to a 4th. But finally today, the deal ended up Fraser and a 7th. Glad that's over.

Turns out, the Kings would have done the deal yesterday, for just the 7th round pick and no roster player, but the Oilers obviously made it clear that they wanted to dump a little salary in this deal. Fair enough I suppose. With taking a huge contract in Smyth that does add some cash to the expense account. But the Oilers are not a cap team right now, so why worry about a dump today?

Brule now knows how the Oilers feel about him now and I'd be surprised if he's "all good" with how this all played out. I'd be a little pissy too. Wouldn't you, knowing the team you play for, was willing to dump you to a team that is going to buy you out or stick on the AHL? Ouch!

How hurt are his feelings? Can he look past all this and move on?

I have no idea. This story isn't over.

Gilbert Brule Re-Signs With Oilers / Sam Gagner Next?

Gilbert Brule an RFA, signed a 2 year deal today with the Edmonton Oilers worth $1.85 million per year. With the new deal, Brule avoids arbitration that was scheduled for August 3rd. I expect Brule to have a good year this season. He has lots to prove.

Sam Gagner has still not signed a new contract with the Oilers yet. Gagner is also a RFA and one would have to think that he would be next in line to sign with the Oilers. No doubt he was waiting to see what Brule got before he proceed to negotiate his deal. Does Gagner try and go for $3.5 - $4 million a year range? You bet, but I think he signs for $3 million a season range. Just a guess. Stay tuned on more Gagner contract news right here at OilersJambalaya.com.

Gilbert Brule, Jeff Deslauriers & JF Jacques File For Arbitration

As per Pierre LeBrun's tweet today, the following players have filed for arbitration. Three of these players are Edmonton Oilers. Gilbert Brule, Jeff Deslauriers & JF Jacques have all filed for arbitration.

Here is the tweet;

On Monday 5th July 2010, @Real_ESPNLeBrun said:

NHLPA announces 31 players filed for salary arbitration today: James Wisniewski, Ben Eager, Andrew Ladd, Clarke MacArthur, Greg Campbell,Blake Wheeler, Tim Kennedy, Ian WhiteAntti Niemi, Jared Boll, Anton StralmanFabian Brunnstrom, Derek Meech, Gilbert Brule, Jeff Drouin-DesLauriers,Jean-Francois Jacques, Brad Richardson, Mark Fraser, Matt Moulson, Daniel Girardi,Chris Campoli, Peter Regin, Daniel Carcillo, Cam Janssen, Nate Thompson, Tanner Glass, Jannik Hansen, Mason Raymond, Eric Fehr, Tomas Fleischmann, Jeff Schultz

That's quite the list. Anyone else shocked that those three Oilers have chosen arbitration?

Gilbert Brule may have a case but even so, he wasn't THAT good last season. Take what you get and play better for a year or two. The money will come with production. He made $800,000 last season.

Then we have JF Jacques. Can someone explain what JF Jacques is going to say in his defence? "Uhhhh... me play hockey." I don't know why he's trying to fight anything? Last season he made $550,000. Not bad for not really playing all season. And he wants more?

Lastly we have Jeff Deslauriers. Deslauriers chose arbitration and Dubnyk didn't. I'd say another edge for DD. Jeff made $625,000 last season and I think that's pretty fair. If he is awarded more than $1 million, that's highway robbery. I'd expect him traded by the start of the season (depending on Khabi's condition).

These three should have elected to negotiate with the team privately as feelings will get hurt. I really hope that these guys settle before arbitration starts because it never ends on great terms.

Arbitration runs from July 20th and goes till August 5.

The Silence Is Killing Me / The Edmonton Oilers RFA's

As this off season trickles by, one has to wonder what is up with the Oilers and the restricted free agents.

Has Sam Gagner's agent been talking to Tambellini? What about Gilbert Brule? Did he get an offer yet? What about Andrew Cogliano? Do the Oilers sign him before/if he gets traded? Do both Deslauriers and Dubnyk get a tendered offer? Is only one coming back? Are both coming back? Lot's of questions that need answering.

Like I said in the title, the silence is killing me.

I would hope that Gagner receives an offer before July 1st as I'm sure at least one other team will throw out an offer sheet for him. I like Gagner too much to lose him because the Oilers didn't try hard enough before it's too late. If another team offers $5 million +, the Oilers will be in tough to sign him to that deal. I should point out that Gagner isn't worth $5+, but another team will do what it takes to get him. He is a key cog for the Oilers moving forward.

Vanek, Kessler, Penner and Kessel all were over paid for this reason. Big offer sheets. Let's not have this happen to Gagner. $3.5 million over 5 years is fair and let's move on and get to signing some of the other young players.

I would also hope that they can sign both goalies. I personally would take the chance and send JDD down to OKC. It is possible that they could lose him on waivers, but if he clears, that provides one heck of a goalie for the OKC Barons.

I would keep Dubnyk with the Oilers and have him backup Khabibulin (and Khabibulin's replacement once he gets hurt.) So if I'm the GM and I'm going to try and send down JDD, he only gets a one year deal with no signing bonus (just in case).

I really hope that Marc Pouliot doesn't elect to go to arbitration. I just can't see him making a good enough case to get big dollars. He should just resign to whatever the Oilers offer. He needs to play well this year and make a strong case for himself next year.

Edmonton Oilers News Today (Brule, O'Sullivan, Nilsson, Deslauriers, Quinn)

It appears like Gilbert Brule will be out for the rest of the season with the right ankle sprain. He is on crutches, but thankfully there was no broken bones. With only a handful of games left, I see no point on rushing him back just so the Oilers can still finish 30th.

Jeff Deslauriers will most likely get the start tonight vs the Coyotes on Hockey Night in Canada. Considering that Dubnyk played last night, I'd say JDD is in.

With the optional skate today, only 10 skaters and Devan Dubnyk participated. Linglet, Cogliano and Arsene were some of the skaters present.

Pat Quinn stated that both O'Sullivan and Nilsson will play tonight. The one guy that sits will be determined later today. I would assume that it would be Charles Linglet. He had a very sub par debut last night against the Stars.

Edmonton Oilers A Game Recap / First 1/2 Sucked, Second 1/2 Decent

This is brief game recap of the Edmonton Oilers vs the Detroit Red Wings game on Sportsnet West.

--------------------

I just want to thank everybody for the kind words and warm wishes yesterday for the birth of my second daughter. My family and I really appreciate it and all four of us are home now.

I would also like to thank my wife for being cool about watching the Oilers game after such a long couple of days. She's tired of watching this crap Oilers team and I don't blame her. I am too. But... I'm hardcore and I don't miss many games.

--------------------

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- With the Wings up 4-0, it was nice to see the Oilers once again make a last half of the game charge. While the Wings manged to win this game, the Oilers at least tried for a little bit.

- With the loss, the Edmonton Oilers have clinched 30th place in the NHL standings. At worst, the Oilers will get the #2 overall pick at the upcoming 2010 rookie draft.

- Jeff Deslauriers played a pretty decent game. Make sure you watch the highlights, he makes some HUGE saves.

- Mike Comrie was moved to the first line and really had himself a good game. Even after Penner was hurt, Comrie kept up the good playing. He had a goal and an assist.

- Andrew Cogliano is not only getting more ice time, he's making the most of it. He had 2 assists and was a +1. He also led the Oilers with 4 hits. I'm guessing the Oilers are really trying to make him look good to other teams so we can trade him in the summer.

- I really liked how Tom Gilbert played as well. He picks up his first ever NHL multi goal game and lead this team in the 3rd period.  It's just too bad the Oilers didn't win because Gilbert did his part.

- Gilbert Brule did better than his stats suggest. He plays an effective game, but if he's paired with people that make errors, it reflects on Brule.

- Aaron Johnson picks up another point by notching an assist on the Mike Comrie goal. If the Oilers don't re-sign Johnson, I'd be shocked.

- Strudwick and Chorney had some great chances for the Oilers when they were on the ice. WTF?!? They both finished the game +1 and +2 respectively.

The Not So Good:

- Losing a game to a high stick goal is horse crap. Whoever made that call was wrong. Very wrong.

- Getting out shot  44-26 is not very good. Not good at all.

- Not showing up till the half way point sucks even more. Judging by the way the Oilers made plays and scored, this could have been another win for the Oilers over the Wings if they would just play a 60 minute game.

- Johnson, Brule, O'Sullivan and Potulny were each -3. Ouch!

- Dustin Penner took a puck to the eye (he left the game) early in the game but he should be OK to play the next game on Friday.

The Side Dish:

- Only the Stockton Thunder played last night. They won their game and clinched a playoff spot. Good for those guys. Read the Game Recap here.

Game Recap: Ryan Whitney Takes It To The Ducks In An Oiler Loss

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Jeff Deslauriers was good. He made some big saves (37 in total) and gave the Oilers hope when the game was looking bleak. He played hard and the team didn't give him much help once the Ducks got going in the 3rd.

- Gilbert Brule played himself a good game. He was everywhere and tried to make an impact on every shift he was out. He had 5 shots on goal and scored with one of them. He's definitely a bright spot on next years team.

- Ryan Whitney was hungry to show the Ducks what they gave up on. I think with his 2 assists and 27:08 in ice time, he did just that. He even got into it with Troy Bodie (a former Oiler prospect) and showed a lot of piss and vinegar. I am really liking the cut of his jib.

- Instead of hating him, I liked Marc Pouliot tonight.

- I liked the passion from Dean Arsene. His rough treatment on Bobby Ryan and then the mercy fight with Mike Brown (he was killed in that fight), was good to see from an Oiler defenceman.

- I thought Mike Comrie had a good game. He didn't score, but he made some great plays and had 4 shots.

- Tom Gilbert never ceases to amaze me lately. He played 25:17 and didn't make a lot of mistakes. He also picked up an assist.

- Patrick O'Sullivan was back in the lineup. He was pretty solid and it looked like his finger didn't hurt him that much.

The Not So Good:

- I miss Visnovsky.

- I don't know how many times Kevin Quinn said "601" in reference to Teemu Selanne being at 600 goals, but it got old real quick.

- Once again the 2009/10 Edmonton Oilers team blows a game in the 3rd period. Even with endless Power Plays, they were out-skilled and outplayed by the Ducks. The 3rd period started as a 1-1 tie game and it got going at the 10 minute mark, for the Ducks. Then with two minutes left they turn it on and get some real good chances or a goal like tonight. It's this aspect of the Oilers game that I really hope they change for next season. I really do not like it.

- And to top it off, the game was boring for the first 50 minutes.

- TheCaptainEthanMoreau had 3 giveaways and had enough ice time that he should have accomplished more than he did. How is this guy NOT in Springfield with the Falcons? Seriously.

The Side Dish:

- The Springfield Falcons lost to the Lowell Devils 4-3 in the shootout. Jordan Eberle picked up an assist and scored a goal in the shootout during the loss. Eberle has at least one point in every game he's played with the Falcons so far this year.

- The Stockton Thunder also played tonight. Recap soon.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

THE SHOOTOUT VIDEO

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Devan Dubnyk almost lost his first win with .03 seconds left in the 3rd period. But he didn't. Lucky for him he continued his good play for a full 65 minutes plus the shootout. Devan Dubnyk has a legitimate NHL win under his belt. I couldn't be happier for him. Great job Devan.

- Ryan Whitney scored his first goal as an Oiler tonight. He's been pretty good since we acquired him. I'm still finding him to be a decent pick up in a trade. Especially for a guy like Lubomir Visnovsky. Whitney had 5 shots and 3 blocked shots to go with his goal. I'd say a decent night.

- Andrew Cogliano is a whole different guy right now. You put him on the top line and he performs. He scores a goal and gets an assist on the Whitney goal. This was one of his best games in a long time. He was solid at both ends of the ice. But can he do it again?

- Gilbert Brule has been quietly one of the Oilers most consistent guys all season long. He did it again tonight as he keeps showing that chemistry with Penner and Cogliano. Brule assisted on both Oiler goals and played a good physical game all game. He's, in my opinion, a keeper for next season. You can just tell he wants to be good.

The Not So Good:

- Ethan Moreau is just plain bad. it's like he has no clue on how to play the game anymore. If Comrie was a healthy scratch, I'm going to be very ticked off.

- Theo Peckham is going to take a lot of the blame for the tying goal by not playing the puck properly, but where was the defender watching the back door guy (Rafalski)? Where was Johnson? Horcoff?

- Speaking of Peckham, his partnership with Johnson wasn't so shit hot tonight. Both of them finished a -2 and while they did look good for long periods of time, they had those rookie mistakes that can cause a game to be lost. They have been a good duo and I'd expect them to be a little better next game.

- I really do not like the Minard/Gagner/Stortini line. Either Quinn figures that Gagner is so damn good that he makes others around good or he's really ticked at him? I honestly do not know the answer so I can't tell you either way. I would hope it's because he thinks he's the cats ass.

The Side Dish:

- If you missed it, Jordan Eberle scored a goal in the first minute of his first game with the Springfield Falcons this year. CLICK HERE for the game recap.

- Also tonight the Stockton Thunder had a game to play. They lost to the Utah Grizzles in a very one-sided game by the score of 6-2. The recap will be posted soon on Oilers Jambalaya.

- The Canadian Sledge Hockey team also lost their game tonight. They were playing against Norway for the bronze medal and Norway scored with 3 seconds left. It's a shame because Canada wanted this so bad after being shocked by Japan yesterday. Good try and we still love you guys. GOCANADAGO!

--------------------

DID YOU KNOW? (Facts About The Edmonton Oilers)

Did you know... at this point of the Oilers season, the majority of fans wanted an Detroit win tonight (to be ahead of Calgary in the standings) over Devan Dubnyk to get his first win tonight and not achieve the record for longest in NHL without first win.

Did you know... Gilbert Brule is 3rd on the team in points with 34 points?

Did you know... Devan Dubnyk started in goal 11 times this season, including tonight? That's a lot of games with no win.

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Theo Peckham - Right after the Habs score their 3rd goal to make it 3-2, Peckham takes a very silly holding penalty and gave the Habs even more momentum than they already had from the go ahead goal. And besides that, he was just in the box a few minutes before that which caused the Habs momentum swing in the first place. Bad game for Peckham.
------------------

BEERS

Penner/Cogliano/Brule - Cogliano gets the fortune of acquiring a dynamic duo in Penner and Brule to play on his wings for this game. Penner and Brule have an uncanny chemistry and adding Cogliano's speed and aggressive puck play just made that line fantastic. Split a mini keg boys. Cheers!

Tom Gilbert - He finished the game a +1 and he had two assists and he blocked 4 shots. Not bad for a 5-4 hockey game.  He's done nothing but impress me since his new top pairing role has started. I can see why he wears the "A" once in a while now. He's one of the leaders for this Oilers team now and down the road. He played 27:49 and was good right down to the wire. One frosty cold one, coming up. Cheers!

Chris Minard - The $275,000 AHL hotshot finally makes his Oilers debut. At the start of the game, I had doubts. But within the first three minutes of the game he has a nice give and go with Gagner and he picks up an assist on the goal. He seemed to play well with Gagner and Pouliot. He sure didn't look out of place. He played 10:54. Have a cold frosty mug of Oilers Jambalaya Budweiser. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Aaron Johnson (He played 26:31. Holy crap. He must be dead after a game like that. And he played really good. He ended the night +1.), Shawn Horcoff (He played well with Comrie. Horcoff even scored tonight. Really, he did.), Robert Nilsson (3 shots and a goal for Bobby. I know, it's strange. He was good.), Devan Dubnyk (He played OK. He let in some weak goals and he wasn't spectacular. But that's OK, he made it to the shootout and even did pretty good in that. He still hasn't won his first NHL game yet.)

------------------

JEERS

Taylor Chorney - I didn't like his game tonight and ending up -3 sucks. Sloppy plays and bad passes makes me want to boo him. So I'm going to. BOOOOOOO!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jason Strudwick (He was looking like he was drowning out there. I'd say I hope he gets better, but who am I kidding.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - The first period was very exciting. Very. Four goals in the first ten minutes was an intense way to start a game. The whole game was good, but that start was great. I knew it was a good game when my pregnant and due wife was even enjoying the game. Not much impresses her lately. lol. So if you missed the game, oh well, you missed the game. That's why we have a recap. ; )

Oh yeah... Ryan Whitney suffered and injury and did not play in the 3rd. The injury bug strikes again.

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - He fought hard for a shutout and was awesome. Watching him beat Marty Brodeur made me remember why I wasn't sad about him getting pulled at the Olympics. JDD was lucky at times, but for the most part made good on his end while the team managed to score twice. Good job Jeff. How about a Bud? Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - His grit and passion came out in every game he plays. He is always trying to do something out there. He was in the right place at the right time for his goal and it was all because of the way that line worked together. Brule was a factor in this game. Is it frosty mug time? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - He was also a big reason why his line was clicking. Gagner had himself another solid game and he wasn't even on the top line. He had 3 shots and picked up an assist on the Pouliot goal. Good job Sammy. How about a cold Kokanee? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Mike Comrie (He quietly plays a great game often. Like tonight), Ryan Whitney (His passing is really good. He's also a big guy that can skate well. He may just make me eat my words.), Marc Pouliot (He scored the Oilers 2nd goal and played a pretty decent game.), Taylor Chorney (He was +2 and played good. This playing time that he's getting now is great for him. Next season can't come soon enough.), Jason Strudwick (He went from #7 guy, to #3/4 guy. Wow! He played good tonight and was +2.), Shawn Horcoff (Good game from Horcoff. He managed to look not useless.), Aaron Johnson (He's another guy that will make me eat my words. He's better than I thought.),

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Great game by the Oilers. I was happy to see JDD get the shutout and I was happy to see the crowd enjoy themselves. But STOP losing guys. The dive for five needs to keep on course. I keep hoping these guys don't do any late season runs. That's the last thing the fans need right now. To finish 10th in the West. Oy!

Paq Twinn - He had some technical troubles. He watched the game, but can't report on it just yet. Stay tuned.

B&J #115 Edmonton Oilers vs Phoenix Coyotes Game Recap (2/8/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? OK. It came down to the Oilers skating on the ice for Quinn to decide. Stortini sits out and Gagner has flown home to have his knee checked out. So means that Nilsson and Brule are back in the lineup after sitting for a few games. Staios and Smid are back in and Chorney and Plante have been sent back down to Springfield.

- If I'm not mistaken, the Oilers are going to announce that the Oilers new farm team will be in Oklahoma City next season. Thanks Springfield Falcons, it's been a slice.

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------
BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - It was a blowout. A bad penalty wasn't going to change anything.

------------------

BEERS

None - They were that bad.

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (I liked his hustle and drive tonight. He tried to prove Quinn wrong.), Dustin Penner (He was the only Oiler at +1. He also scored the only Oiler goal.), Ryan Potulny (He also played with some jam. He had 5 shots and was 58% on faceoffs.), Ladislav Smid (He played a pretty decent game. He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots.), Robert Nilsson (He was not very flashy, but he had 6 shots on net. He also picked up the assist on the Penner goal.), Tom Gilbert (I have liked Gibby's game for a while now. He's been the most consistent Oiler on the back end lately.)

------------------

JEERS

Shawn Horcoff - Man was he terrible. Error after error. It was just embarrassing to watch these 3rd line guys. When you talk about an epic fail, talk Shawn Horcoff. Booooo!

Ethan Moreau - Tied with Staios for a team worst -4. ~Sweet!~ Boooooo!

Steve Staios - He was cause for a few of the Coyotes goals tonight. He was just plain bad. Not a great first game back. He was tied for a team worst with -4 and he had no hits and only one blocked shot. Boooooo!

Jeff Deslauriers - Wow did he suck. Soft goals looked even softer against him tonight. Games like these don't help the GAA. Jeff looked bad and probably would be the first to admit it. Good try, but Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Fernando Pisani (He was lumped on a bad line with two bad hockey players. It seems to be soaking into Pisani. He wasn't very good tonight either.), Jason Strudwick (While I don't put a lot of blame on him - he has very little skill - he was brutal tonight. He did drop the gloves though, but was beat),

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Wow that was painful to watch. Even more than the other bad losses lately. The Twitterland was full of pissed off people. (check the TweetCast recap box above) It gets harder to be positive for these guys. It gets harder to believe that Pat Quinn is the right guy for this job. It gets harder to just simply turn on the TV. But I do it. I love this team - well, not the current one - and I'm here for everything, good or bad. I'm here for that blue and orange logo. I'm here for the oil drop. But most of all... I'm here for the hardcore and best hockey fans ever. The Edmonton Oiler fans kick ass and we deserve better. You deserve better. Patience I guess.

ROAD TRIP!!! Oilers in Denver to take on the Avs

The Oilers practiced today in Denver and the lines stayed the same as the last game against the Wild. Brule and Nilsson skated with Bucky today so it looks like they won't be in the game tomorrow night against the Avalanche. Expect Jeff Deslauriers to start in goal.

Word has it that Ladislav Smid and Steve Staios may be coming back soon. But don't expect them back too soon as Quinn seemed less than impressed with their conditioning. Mind you, they are in the Mile High city and from what I have heard, it's hard on the system being that high.

With those two close to returning, I would suspect that the Oilers won't try and claim Nick Boynton who is on re-entry waivers. I think he would be a good pickup, but the Tambo wants to subtract, not add at this point.

Don't forget that with the 2010 Olympics coming up soon, we will need to forget about the Oilers and start booing some of our beloved players. Visnovsky? BOOOOO! Grebeshkov? BOOOOO! Pronger? Boo... damn it. Yay!

I can't wait for the Olympic games to start and I fully expect Canada to win gold in both the Men's and the Ladies Ice Hockey events. GOCANADAGO!

Don't forget that the Oilers play the Avs on CBC's Hockey Night In Canada this Saturday night.

Beers & Jeers #112 - Edmonton Oilers Full Game Recap vs Carolina Hurricanes (2/1/10)

Who's in? From what I understand, Potulny was sick today and he did not play. Pisani also sat out and we don't know why. Stortini and Comrie draw back in. Alex Plante has also been called up and he will play in his 1st ever NHL game. He will play with Strudwick.

- Since it's a PPV, not many people are paying to watch this game. I'm a hardcore and since I needed to watch it in order to do the Beers & Jeers, I paid for it.

FINAL SCORE

Carolina Hurricanes - 2

Edmonton Oilers - 4

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None -

------------------

BEERS

Marc Pouliot - Wow! Talk about a breakout game. He scored the Oilers 3rd goal (game winner) and assisted on the Jacques (1st goal of game) goal and finished a +2. Not too bad. He also had 3 shots. Pouliot even found some time on the PK and the PP which means Quinn was liking him tonight. He needs to improve his faceoffs but played a good game. Feel like a cold one? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - Gagner had himself a good game. He was contributing nice plays and even squeaked a goal by Cam Ward. Gagner has been on a points rampage and thanks to that goal, it continues. He had 2 shots and a takeaway. Good stuff? Not really. But good enough for a Budweiser? Cheers!

Mike Comrie -  The boy in the bubble was might fine tonight. He made some real nice plays and really led his line tonight. He was the one "making" things happen. He had 6 shots and picks up an assist on the Gagner goal. Solid night out for Mono Mike. How about a can of Pilsner? That should cure what you have? Cheers!

Alex Plante - His first ever NHL game and he's thrown to the lions. OK. At this point in the season, every team is a lion. But Plante did pretty good. He didn't see any PP or PK time but did manage to play 12:00 minutes. Not only did he look OK out there, he picks up his first ever NHL point with an assist on the Jacques goal. Good for him. If that doesn't boost the confidence then nothing will. Frosty cold one rookie? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (I liked Brule. He played pretty good. He scored a goal and served up 3 hits.), Andrew Cogliano (I also liked him. he tried hard and was rewarded with an assist on the Brule goal.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He is now the Oilers best defenseman. He lived up to it. He played over 21:00 minutes and was a +1.), Zack Stortini (Storts drew back in after sitting for 2 games and made the best of it. He was banging and crashing for 4 hits and he added an assist.), JF Jacques (He scored and had an assist. What the hell huh? All this and he only played 10:00 minutes.), Ethan Moreau (He had a good game. It was a trange sight for sure. Adding Comrie ure helped that line.), Shawn Horcoff (He also had a good game with Comrie. Watch for Quinn to stick with this line.)

------------------

JEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - Maybe I am being a little harsh, but his 2 goals that went by him were weak. Those were shots you should have saved. For that reason alone, Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Taylor Chorney (Now it's totally not his fault, but he was burned at least 3 times tonight.  However, he did have a team high 5 blocked shots and played OK. He just needs more experience.), Denis Grebeshkov (He had 3 giveaways and I don't expect anything less from him. Sure he played pretty good, but he needs to stop doing that.), Dustin Penner (His penalty was lazy and pissed Quinn off. He at times had that fire to compete, other times it was gone. At one point Quinn had him benched.), Robert Nilsson (He wasn't great tonight at all. I've seen him better.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Finally a win for the Edmonton Oilers. Do you know how hard it is to write about a stinky team? You can only say so much before you start repeating yourself.  The refs only blew one call and that was the Comrie call. He didn't even see the Canes player coming. Pure accident. Oh well. The Oilers gained a lead and held on to it for a full 60 minutes. That might have been the best full game they have played in months.  All I can say is that it was worth the PPV money. Finally.

Paq Twinn - He missed the game because he is boycotting the Oilers PPV's for the rest of the season. Can you blame him?

Beers & Jeers #110 / Oilers Game Recap vs St. Louis Blues (1/28/10)

Who's in? Mike Comrie and Gilbert Brule will draw back into the lineup tonight which means that two need to sit. Stortini and O'Sullivan drew the short straws for tonight. The lines have changes slightly from last game. Staios and Smid are still out (injured) and won't play. They both suffer from concussion symptoms. No word on when they will be back in the lineup.

The Edmonton Oilers current Man Games Lost is 297. Ouch!

- Don't forget to vote on the poll above this post. Your opinion matters to me. Please vote.

FINAL SCORE

St. Louis Blues - 2

Edmonton Oilers - 1

BAD TIMING PENALTY

------------------

BEERS

Dustin Penner - The big guy was pretty good tonight. He used his size well and made some great plays because of it.  Penner has been in a goal slump for awhile now and finally pots one. I can only imagine the relief he must have felt. He not only scored, but he also went 7W-2L for 78% on faceoffs. A few of those draws were must wins and he came through. This team needs more Dustin Penner's (when he's motivated). Good job tonight Pens, how about a cold one? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - The little guy had his foot on the gas pedal tonight. He was trying everything and even was throwing his pint sized body around. He picked up an assist on Penner's goal and that gives him 10 point in his last 12 games. He went 5W-3L for 63% on the dot and fired off 7 shots, but only 4 hit the net/goalie. I liked him tonight. I figure a frosty beer is in order. Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - For a guy that missed quite some time due to the "flu"", he was skating fast and doing all the little things right. The stats are not telling the truth on how he played. He was physical and determined. But id Brule wants to be a great NHL player, he needs to do that no matter how crappy your teammates are. Good game Brule. Cold Budweiser? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sheldon Souray (I liked him. He played mean and finished his checks. When the Oilers needed a boost, he provided it.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He quietly played a good game. He had 3 shots and 4 blocked shots.), Mike Comrie (He played OK. I liked his fire when he dropped the gloves. He never ceases to surprise me.), Jeff Deslauriers (While he didn't get the win, he was pretty good. I don't have much to complain about him.)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Just for losing again... Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The 3rd Line (I really didn't care much for this line of Moreau, Horcoff and Pisani. While they weren't bad, they were the worst Oiler line of the night in my opinion.), JF Jacques (He had 4 hits and that's about it. He didn't agitate the Blues and he needs to do that to be effective. Hits are great, but they only get you so far.) Andrew Cogliano (From the 1st line to the 4th line just like that. He was average tonight and I'm sure it's not hard to do playing with Jacques and having limited ice time.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Basically if I was grading the game for the Cult of Hockey, anyone who wasn't in the Beers section would have received a 5 or a 4.  This game was a snoozefest for the first 40 minutes then the action picked up a little and I thought that this game would go to overtime. If the only Oilers could have only busted out with one more goal. *sigh* Gagner did came close.

Both Souray and Visnovsky were terrible with giveaways, but played well in my eyes. Go figure? Grebeshkov didn't make me yell so that's a good thing. Chorney and Strudwick did OK as well. I don't know. This team is strange. Is a win ever going to happen for the Oilers? This year? In 2010?

FINAL SCORE

Edmonton Oilers - 4

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - Go figure.

------------------

BEERS

Patrick O'Sullivan - He played a real good game.  His legs were moving and he had a nice breakaway goal that I'm sure will be a highlight for month.  The guy has skill.  No doubt.  But what about the heart?  He had a goal and an assist for 2 point and was a +1.  He also had 5 shots on net.  So for tonight's game, have a frosty cold beer. Cheers!

Sam Gagner - I was glad Quinn switched up the lines and put Gagner with Stone and Pisani.  Both guy are more responsible than Gagner is and it showed.  Gagner played loose and carefree and you know what?  He was good.  He had 7 shots and picked up an assist on the Grebeshkov goal.  One of the better games he's played in a long time.  Good job little dude.  Bud? Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - I really like the way he has been playing lately.  Lots of "jam" and he's consistently trying to make a play.  Gotta love the effort.  I wish more Oilers had it.  He had 4 shots, 2 hits and 2 takeaways.  Oh, and he scored the Oilers opening goal.  For a solid effort, how about a cold Albino Rhino Dark Ale? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Steve Staios (I was impressed by his game. He played a simple game and didn't look as slow tonight.  He even finished +1.), Ladislav Smid (He's turned into a good defensive guy. 3 hits and 3 blocked shots, not too bad Ladi.), Denis Grebeshkov (Even though he's been a train wreck lately, he did find a way to score a goal and add an assist.  But he still finds a way to be -1.),

------------------

JEERS

The 4th Line of (Moreau, Cogliano and Stortini) - Ugh!  What a terrible line.  Sadly, I feel bad for all three of them.  These three just don't mesh and I don't know why the coaching staff keeps going with these guys.  It's just plain ugly when they are on.  Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Dustin Penner (For the sake of being -2, you are in the jeers.  He played pretty good reunited with Horcoff, but was burned far to often.), Robert Nilsson (Same goes for Nilsson.  He was OK, but couldn't keep the puck out of the net and also was a -2.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That was a meed up night. Cheering my ass of for Team Canada and paying $$$ for the Oilers PPV.  I was honestly entertained by both games - I had the junior game on the computer beside the TV and the Oiler game - but the Junior game was tops.  Entertaining as hell and it had me gripped to my couch.  My mother in law calls during the game and starts bitching about how hockey is stupid - the USA team was up 4-2 at that time - and that it's not fun to watch. WHAT?!? Sure they were losing but it was a good game. BOOM! Eberle scores! and she gets a little excited. By the time she hung up Eberle scores again. WOoOOoOOoo!  Talk about a clutch goal guy. Unbelievable. It's tied up and it's going to overtime.

Then the let down. *sigh* The Canadians played well and it sucks to lose that way. But come on, you had to see it coming. The Americans already played the Canadians to a shootout loss and were not going to lose this time.  Those USA kids are really good and really played as a team.  And I'll tell you, Junior games are way faster than NHL games.  Those kids can fly.

As far as the Oilers game, it was much like the Junior game as it was a back and forth, come from behind and get it to overtime game.  The guys in the beers impressed me while really only the 4th line stunk in my eyes.  I liked the top 3 lines but would still like Brule on the 1st line with Penner.  Nilsson is not Hemsky.  I wish Quinn would stop believing he is.

Paq Twinn - *coming soon*
