Tonight's Oiler Lines vs Coyotes

Tonight's lines vs Coyotes:

Smyth-Horcoff-Hemsky
Hall-NugentHopkins-Eberle
Tyrvainen-Belanger-Jones
Green-Lander-Keller

Chorney-Petry
Sutton-Gilbert
Potter-Fedun

Khabibulin
Danis

The old school line of Smyth/Horcoff/Hemsky is back together. I suppose this is the best way to ease Hemsky back into the lineup after being out forever with the shoulder injury. Excited to see them out together again.

I also look forward to seeing the #1 line of the future. Hall/RNH/Eberle should be a dynamic line for the Oilers.

Shane Doan... A Possible Edmonton Oiler in 2012?

I was lucky enough to not be working last night and was able to make it to my beer league slo pitch game. Well surprise to me, Brook brought his family that was in town to fill in for the players missing. Brook brought his sister Leighann and her husband Chad. Both great people and pretty good ball players too.

Shane Doan
Brook also brought out his brother Shane. What a thrill for me that was. Last time I was this close to a guy from the NHL, former Canucks player Zenith Komarniski was rabbit punching me in the face during a ball hockey game in Edmonton. I had to laugh a little as Shane's wife was giving him the gears about playing before the game started. "You be careful!" "Your not that young anymore!" "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Haha! Loved it. My wife gives me the same guff and I'm not a pro athlete.

All three of them played great. All good hitters and I think they had fun playing with us. I know I enjoyed myself.

I'm not a fanboy and I made an effort to not be a hockey nerd. It was clear anyways, as I'm rocking my Oilers shirt and hat. Even my bat is blue and orange. It's funny to know how many people didn't know who he was. It took most everyone, half the game to figure it out.

Leighann Doan (Reimer)
So did I get a picture or an autograph? No. The guy was trying to be a normal guy playing ball and I wanted to treat him as so and not pester him with hockey stuff. He's as normal as you and me.

You can tell he's a captain of a team. He went up to every single person on the team after the game was over and shaked their hands and thanked us for allowing him to play. He made sure to get everyone and he remembered everyone's names. Classy stuff that was.

To the interesting part...

So as the game is pretty much over, the topic of him being in Phoenix came up. He said that it was good and he has one more year there. Then what? He replied with a smile. Of course, he can't really say much about his situation. But you know me. I mention the Oilers as an option and he starts to go on about how great of a place Calgary is. I just about Luongo'd on my beer. CALGARY?!?!

Then he looks at me and says "Why would I ever go to Edmonton?".

While I'm standing there trying to think of my best thing to say (I'm losing my mind right at that moment and I'm sputtering something out about Hall, Eberle and RNH), he ends up standing there laughing at me. He was completely kidding around. He told me that the Oilers are his favorite team. Always have been.

"Will you come to Edmonton then and finish off your career at home?", I asked.

No answer... just a big smile.

That gives me hope. BRING DOAN HOME!!!

BEERS & JEERS PLAYER GRADES

The Cult of Hockey Grading System:
10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (5) He's been better lately and tonight he carried on. He did end up -1 but I really didn't mind him tonight. He had 4 hits and had 2 blocked shots.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (6) BEERS He was one of the best Oiler forwards. His line was buzzing for the last two thirds of the game. He tried endless moves and was beaten a lot. He's trying, just not succeeding. He had 2 shots.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (0) DNP (Injured)

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (4) He was a -2 player and was burned a few times. He had 3 shots and I kept waitng for him to be better. Never really happened.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (7) BEERS He was pretty good with Hall and Eberle. He was 13/8 for 62% on faceoffs. He played his usual Horcoff game and had a few good chances to score. This is the best I had seen him since he's returned from injury.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (5) I thought we was OK before he was smashed in the mouth again with a puck. Poor guy. He left and didn't return. He played 8:55 and was 50% on faceoffs.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (6) BEERS A decent game for Ebs. Like I said above, he was clicking with his linemates. They were making things happen. easily the Oilers best line. Can you say that in a 5-0 game?

#16 COLIN FRASER - (4) Like last game, nothing really to talk about. He had 2 shots and was 6/5 for 55% on faceoffs.

#22 JF JACQUES - (3) JEERS Waste of a roster spot. He's supposed to be the energy guy. The hit'em and make them pay guy. He's not making it hard on the other team at all. Stortini should draw back in after a quiet game by Jacques. 3 hits. That's it.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (7) BEERS He was pretty good. He worked the puck well and was never scored on. In his 18:38 of ice time, he had 2 shots and 4 hits. I liked Foster tonight.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (2) JEERS He was brutal. HE WAS ON THE ICE FOR 4 OUT OF THE 5 GOALS! While some will argue with me, 1 shot and 1 hit isn't great for a guy like Penner. He was -3 and I hope he gets the message Renney went the team after the game was over. Booooo!

#28 RYAN JONES - (4) He was put back on the 4th line in the 2nd period and only played 7:49.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (0) DNP (Injured)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (6) I felt bad for him. He tried, but with zero help from the guys in front, he could only do so much. Not his fault for losing this game.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (scratch)

#45 SHAWN BELLE - (5) I thought he was decent. He was assigned back to Oklahoma after the game was over to make room for Smid coming back. Too bad they wouldn't send Strudwick instead. Belle was even and played 16:51 and had 2 shots and 2 hits. His low point? He had the Oilers only 2 giveaways all game. Oh well, thanks for trying hard. You are welcome back anytime.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP (scratch)

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) He was throwing some big hits and even nailed Paul Bissonette. He played pretty damn good for a guy with a hurt wrist. He had 4 hits and 3 blocked shots. His minus -2 results from his poor position play.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (4) Brule sucked again. Not entirely in his control. After Cogliano left the game, Brule didn't see much ice after that. He's looking like he really is a bust. Too bad, I remember him with the Giants, he was a star.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (3) JEERS He was terrible! -3 and was out of sorts all game long. So much for the good game we just seen him play. He had 3 shots and that's about it.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (4) I was kind of liking him and then not liking him at the same time. He had some good rushes and was looking to have a big game. But he failed to go to those hard areas. He failed to make magic happen. Is that unfair of me? Perhaps... but we all expect it.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (3) JEERS He was OK. Until his line was roasted. Multiple times. He was a paltry 33% on faceoffs and only had 2 shots in 20:19. Not great considering he ended up -3.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (5) He was bounced up to the 3rd line and was ultimately screwed on that after Cogliano was mouth pucked. He played 12:25 and seen no PP or PK time.

BAD TIMING PENALTY (what is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

Andrew Cogliano - Just as the Oilers were gaining some momentum and were only down 2-0 at that point, Cogliano takes a delay of penalty for shooting the puck over the glass. Tough break, but it was a BTP. The Coyotes scored on the PP to make it 3-0.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (0) DNP

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (0) DNP

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (7) Smid had a real good game. He picked up an assist and had 4 blocked shots. With all this talk about players being ready to take the next step, that's Smid. He's ready.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (0) DNP

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (0) DNP

#12 ALEXANDRE GIROUX - (6) Giroux had a goal and it did look pretty. But I don't think even with a strong game like tonight, it's enough to stick with the Oilers.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) While he did have some good flashes of goodness on the PK, I wasn't all that much of a fan of his tonight. He had 3 shots and that's about all. He did go 50% on faceoffs. That's an improvement.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (0) DNP

#16 COLIN FRASER - (6) Fraser played the same way he's played this pre-season. Gritty and hard nosed. He's a guy that will stick up for his linemates. I think I'm going to like Fraser.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) Injured

#23 LINUS OMARK - (0) DNP

#25 BEN ONDRUS - (0) DNP

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (7) Foster had himself a steady and productive game. He had a couple of shots and a few hits. There isn't much more to say about Foster other than he's a good guy to have. Very sound.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) I didn't like his game (Other than his overtime winning goal). He didn't stick out at all for me tonight. I kept waiting for him to make people take notice and he didn't. Can he succeed on the 3rd line this year? Hope so.

#28 RYAN JONES - (6) Jones, in my opinion had a pretty good first half. Even though he was a team worst -3, he did play well. He made some hits and worked his butt off and the minus ratings weren't directly a result of him. In the race for 13 (th spot) with Reddox, I think Jones beat him this game. Tamby must be happy with today's game.

#29 MARTIN GERBER - (7) Gerber came in after JDD went out at the halfway point and made JDD look bad. Gerber is a very capable NHL goalie and should almost stay with the Oilers. His positioning really helps him make a save and make it look easy. If he does go to the Barons, they are going to have solid goaltender this year.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (0) DNP

#37 RICHARD PETIOT - (8) BEERS Wow! Petiot won the hearts of the Oiler fans tonight. He was a complete package. He had 6 bone jarring hits and 5 blocked shots. I am tiger, hear me roar! Petiot just made the decision a little easier for Tamby, he's at another level above the rest of the bubble guys. He should make the team. He's that good.

#38 JEFF DESLAURIERS - (6) All he had to do was play a good game to keep his head above the water. He did start out great. He even covered the top part of the net well. But after the first goal, he kind of unravelled. Was this the last time we see JDD in an Oilers uniform? Waivers or a trade seems likely here.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP

#41 TAYLOR CHORNEY - (7) You guys should have seen him play. He had a huge hit and then dropped the gloves with Vern Fiddler and actually did really good. He even blacked a few shots. This wasn't the normal Chorney. I liked this one!

#42 RYAN O'MARRA - (6) Nothing special from O'Marra. He did pick up an assist and played OK for the most part. Unless he was different in person (compared to my TV), he's going down to OKC.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP

#45 SHAWN BELLE - (0) DNP

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP

#48 ALEX PLANTE - (7) Plante had a heck of a game. He's also making it tough on Renney on who he's going to keep. Plante took some lessons from MacIntyre this morning and I was hoping for a fight. He didn't, but his game was very physical. Did I mention the assists? 2 of them actually.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (0) DNP

#54 CHRIS VANDE VELDE - (0) DNP

#57 COLIN MACDONALD - (6) He drew a penalty with some hustle and hard work. I liked that he showed me he wasn't a waste like I said he was. He proved me wrong tonight. Heck, he even scored a goal. Colin's not going to make the Oilers, but he sure is working his ass off and trying.

#58 JEFF PETRY - (0) DNP

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (7) I liked Brule. Best guy on his line.  He tried hard and made some nice plays. 3 shots and 4 hits is a good night for Brule. Add an assist and and that gives him a 7.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (7) Normal Tom Gilbert game. Nothing much to complain about other than he's a shoe shopping softie.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (8) BEERS Hemsky had fun tonight. He's a different player with Paajarvi and Gagner. This is going to be the #1 line. Hemsky's passing was on the money, but he does still need to shoot more. Maybe he's saving them for the shootout winners like tonight. Atta boy Hemsky! He's the thing that pushed him up to an 8. He blocked 2 shots. I don't recall the last time I seen him do that.

#85 LIAM REDDOX - (6) The Red Ox played well. Did he shine more than Jones? I don't know. I don't think he did. Stat wise he didn't do much. Overall playing, he was OK.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (8) The new 1st line center was fantastic. He needs to hit the net more and maybe he would score more. Hehe! He did score a beauty on a breakaway. He went 41% on the faceoff dot and that is still an area that needs improving, but that's about it. He can play the game with his smarts. Playing with those guys makes him look smarter. I hope they stay together.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (8) BEERS Holy hell Paajarvi can fly. BOOM! Just like that he's off like a bat out of hell. He provides so much space for the skilled Hemsky and the shorter, Gagner. Paajarvi is the glue for any line, but this line needs him the most. No doubt in my mind Paajarvi has the best shot to win the Calder for rookie of the year. He's just THAT GOOD!

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Jeff Deslauries was really, really good. He kept this team in this game. Jeff has been better than I had expected this season.

- Pouliot was a work horse. He played pretty good. He was one guy who I seen all game and not for bad stuff either.

- Ryan Whitney is making me a believer. He's been great. Tonight he was pushy, angry and very aware. He was making some real great passes and was on the ice for both Oiler goals.

- Tom Gilbert also played pretty good. He picked up two assists on the Oilers only two goals. I even seen him push a guy down. I know. Shocking.

- I thought that Aaron Johnson was also pretty solid. He laid out some hard and heavy hits and he's looking like he fits in on this squad.

- Dustin Penner didn't really play well all game, but he did score his 29th goal of the season and that makes me happy. One more for 30.

- With only 7:36 of ice time, Ryan Jones didn't accomplish much. He did score the tying goal though. So that's something right?

- Andrew Cogliano played with Penner again this game and he picked up an assist on Penner's goal.

- Dean Arsene had 5 hits and played pretty good.

The Not So Good:

- This was a boring game. Even the overtime and shootout had no drama. UGH! Glad this train wreck is almost over.

- The Oilers take this game to a shootout. Tom Gilbert is the best choice? 8 rounds of shootout and no Cogliano? Strange.

- Mike Comrie is the natural center on his line yet, Zack Stortini was playing center. With Comrie not wanting to make concessions to improve the team, that is reason enough for me to not want him back next season.

- Strudwick and Chorney were their usual terrible selves. Both were burned by being on the ice for both Coyote goals.

- Shawn Horcoff made some bad plays and wasn't really that good. Maybe he's just tired of the crap like the rest of us?

The Side Dish:

- The Falcons only had one goal in a 6-1 loss. Eberle was the guy to score. Recap here.

- The Thunder were losing 4-1 at the time of this recap. Recap to follow.

- Hall vs Seguin recap is here.

- Who's Out? Who's in? OK. It came down to the Oilers skating on the ice for Quinn to decide. Stortini sits out and Gagner has flown home to have his knee checked out. So means that Nilsson and Brule are back in the lineup after sitting for a few games. Staios and Smid are back in and Chorney and Plante have been sent back down to Springfield.

- If I'm not mistaken, the Oilers are going to announce that the Oilers new farm team will be in Oklahoma City next season. Thanks Springfield Falcons, it's been a slice.

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

*coming soon*

------------------
BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - It was a blowout. A bad penalty wasn't going to change anything.

------------------

BEERS

None - They were that bad.

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (I liked his hustle and drive tonight. He tried to prove Quinn wrong.), Dustin Penner (He was the only Oiler at +1. He also scored the only Oiler goal.), Ryan Potulny (He also played with some jam. He had 5 shots and was 58% on faceoffs.), Ladislav Smid (He played a pretty decent game. He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots.), Robert Nilsson (He was not very flashy, but he had 6 shots on net. He also picked up the assist on the Penner goal.), Tom Gilbert (I have liked Gibby's game for a while now. He's been the most consistent Oiler on the back end lately.)

------------------

JEERS

Shawn Horcoff - Man was he terrible. Error after error. It was just embarrassing to watch these 3rd line guys. When you talk about an epic fail, talk Shawn Horcoff. Booooo!

Ethan Moreau - Tied with Staios for a team worst -4. ~Sweet!~ Boooooo!

Steve Staios - He was cause for a few of the Coyotes goals tonight. He was just plain bad. Not a great first game back. He was tied for a team worst with -4 and he had no hits and only one blocked shot. Boooooo!

Jeff Deslauriers - Wow did he suck. Soft goals looked even softer against him tonight. Games like these don't help the GAA. Jeff looked bad and probably would be the first to admit it. Good try, but Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Fernando Pisani (He was lumped on a bad line with two bad hockey players. It seems to be soaking into Pisani. He wasn't very good tonight either.), Jason Strudwick (While I don't put a lot of blame on him - he has very little skill - he was brutal tonight. He did drop the gloves though, but was beat),

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Wow that was painful to watch. Even more than the other bad losses lately. The Twitterland was full of pissed off people. (check the TweetCast recap box above) It gets harder to be positive for these guys. It gets harder to believe that Pat Quinn is the right guy for this job. It gets harder to just simply turn on the TV. But I do it. I love this team - well, not the current one - and I'm here for everything, good or bad. I'm here for that blue and orange logo. I'm here for the oil drop. But most of all... I'm here for the hardcore and best hockey fans ever. The Edmonton Oiler fans kick ass and we deserve better. You deserve better. Patience I guess.

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - Go figure.

------------------

BEERS

Patrick O'Sullivan - He played a real good game.  His legs were moving and he had a nice breakaway goal that I'm sure will be a highlight for month.  The guy has skill.  No doubt.  But what about the heart?  He had a goal and an assist for 2 point and was a +1.  He also had 5 shots on net.  So for tonight's game, have a frosty cold beer. Cheers!

Sam Gagner - I was glad Quinn switched up the lines and put Gagner with Stone and Pisani.  Both guy are more responsible than Gagner is and it showed.  Gagner played loose and carefree and you know what?  He was good.  He had 7 shots and picked up an assist on the Grebeshkov goal.  One of the better games he's played in a long time.  Good job little dude.  Bud? Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - I really like the way he has been playing lately.  Lots of "jam" and he's consistently trying to make a play.  Gotta love the effort.  I wish more Oilers had it.  He had 4 shots, 2 hits and 2 takeaways.  Oh, and he scored the Oilers opening goal.  For a solid effort, how about a cold Albino Rhino Dark Ale? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Steve Staios (I was impressed by his game. He played a simple game and didn't look as slow tonight.  He even finished +1.), Ladislav Smid (He's turned into a good defensive guy. 3 hits and 3 blocked shots, not too bad Ladi.), Denis Grebeshkov (Even though he's been a train wreck lately, he did find a way to score a goal and add an assist.  But he still finds a way to be -1.),

------------------

JEERS

The 4th Line of (Moreau, Cogliano and Stortini) - Ugh!  What a terrible line.  Sadly, I feel bad for all three of them.  These three just don't mesh and I don't know why the coaching staff keeps going with these guys.  It's just plain ugly when they are on.  Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Dustin Penner (For the sake of being -2, you are in the jeers.  He played pretty good reunited with Horcoff, but was burned far to often.), Robert Nilsson (Same goes for Nilsson.  He was OK, but couldn't keep the puck out of the net and also was a -2.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That was a meed up night. Cheering my ass of for Team Canada and paying $$$ for the Oilers PPV.  I was honestly entertained by both games - I had the junior game on the computer beside the TV and the Oiler game - but the Junior game was tops.  Entertaining as hell and it had me gripped to my couch.  My mother in law calls during the game and starts bitching about how hockey is stupid - the USA team was up 4-2 at that time - and that it's not fun to watch. WHAT?!? Sure they were losing but it was a good game. BOOM! Eberle scores! and she gets a little excited. By the time she hung up Eberle scores again. WOoOOoOOoo!  Talk about a clutch goal guy. Unbelievable. It's tied up and it's going to overtime.

Then the let down. *sigh* The Canadians played well and it sucks to lose that way. But come on, you had to see it coming. The Americans already played the Canadians to a shootout loss and were not going to lose this time.  Those USA kids are really good and really played as a team.  And I'll tell you, Junior games are way faster than NHL games.  Those kids can fly.

As far as the Oilers game, it was much like the Junior game as it was a back and forth, come from behind and get it to overtime game.  The guys in the beers impressed me while really only the 4th line stunk in my eyes.  I liked the top 3 lines but would still like Brule on the 1st line with Penner.  Nilsson is not Hemsky.  I wish Quinn would stop believing he is.

Paq Twinn - *coming soon*

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - He records his 1st ever NHL shutout.  He was brilliant tonight.  He made huge saves and looked good handling the puck.  He really stepped up his game tonight and it was much needed.  He made 36 saves and if anyone is thirsty, it would be Jeff.  Frosty mug of Bud for the game breaker?  Cheers!

Sheldon Souray -He scores a lucky goal and picks up a well earned assist on the Horcoff goal.  I'd have to say he also stepped up for this game.  Maybe the Quinn talk is going to pay off after all.  Souray was dominant tonight and really played a tough and solid game.  He deserves a cold Stella. Cheers!

Ales Hemsky - He played really well tonight.  He never gave up and was flashy all night.  His goal was a nice deke from a nice pass from Penner.  I thought that it was cool for the fans at the game to see him score this goal as it is his 100th career NHL goal. This is the Hemsky that made me like the cut of his jib. Glad he's back.  A frosty beer Hemmer? Cheers!

Shawn Horcoff - He played a great game despite not being able to take many faceoffs (0W-2L=0%).  He scores with a nice tip in form a Souray shot and gets an assist on the Souray goal.  Horcoff did all the little things right tonight and was rewarded by the hockey gods with some points.  It's Miller Time... Cheers!

Ethan Moreau -  I hate to even say it but he was pretty good.  He also took notice of what Quinn had to say and he showed it tonight.  He didn't take a BTP (o hits in the game is probably why) and he actually got some minutes throughout the entire game.  Go figure huh? The Captain even scores the game winner by scoring the 1st goal of the game. An amazing night so have an amazing beer.   Mmmmm... Pilsner. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ryan Potulny (He played a good game and picked up an assist and some extra minutes.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He plays solid and picks up 2 assists.  He responded well tonight and was a team best +2.), Dustin Penner (He was screening and winning faceoffs.  This guy can do anything this year.), Gilbert Brule (He plays so consistant this season.  He picks up an assist and had 2 hits.), Ladislav Smid (The mistakes from last game are long gone.  He played solid and was a +1 and I've allready forgoten about last game.), Sam Gagner (He played well but was more ivisable than his two linemates.), Andrew Cogliano (Had a real good game with Moreau and Potulny.  He just needs to play his own game and the points will start flowing.)

------------------

JEERS

None -

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jason Strudwick (If not for the 4 blocked shots, all you would have is 4 giveaways to show for your game.  +1 or not, you need to be better even though I know you can't.)

-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He played well.  Damn goats! *shakes fist*

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He didn't play again. *dances jig*

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That was a great game to watch.  It was exciting with all the goals but was a little nerve racking when the Oilers were stinking it up in the 3rd.  JDD played great and the Oilers really needed that from him tonight.  Talk about a confidance booster... 1st career shutout.  I ended up liking the line changes that Quinn did.  Man is Penner great so far this year.  He blows my mind.  Faceoffs, shots, hits,  you name it.  The dude can do it.  The best part of the game is that it was a PPV and the Oilers actually do something great.  What a way to start off the week.  GOILERS!

Paq Twinn - Much better game from the Oil tonight, for the most part anyway. Played a great opening 20 min. Then played well enough to keep the 2nd scoreless, until Horc scores with .1 second remaining...again. This time it counted. After getting a late goal like that you'd think they would come out like gangbusters in the 3rd...WRONG! The Oilers hung JDD out to dry, the kid shut the door though. JDD was phenomenal in the 3rd, may have won the game cause the rest of the team were just a bunch oif headless chickens. With all of this in mind, a win is a win. GOILERS! Game Grade: B

Beers and Jeers #50 (Mar 26/09 vs. Phoenix Coyotes)

This game has must win all over it. The Oilers can not afford to lose. It's anyone's guess what squad comes out on the ice. I hope it's the contenders, not the pretenders. Let's Go Oilers!

Roli will be starting his 30th consecutive game tonight. Surprise!

Reddox is drawing back into the lineup since getting knocked in the noggin'. Pouliot will be back in the press box. What did Stortini do to piss off MacT? Sleep with his wife once to often? What? I just don't get it. I just think that Reddox should have a few more days off before playing.

-------------

1st Period

1-0 Coyotes at 3:42 by Lombardi

2nd Period

2-0 Coyotes at 11:38 by Klee

3-0 Coyotes at 14:46 by Hanzal

3rd Period

3-1 Coyotes. (Kotalik from Hemsky and Horcoff at 10:01 on the PP)

3-2 Coyotes. (Hemsky from Staios at 10:44)
------------------

Tonight's Starting Lines

O'Sullivan Horcoff Hemsky (This line was a little better than average. Horcoff did what he had to do tonight. And he did it well with one assist and 2 shots. O'Sullivan had a takeaway, a hit and two shots. Hemsky was the best of the line. He scores... He gets an assist... And 4 shots and 2 hits. Not a bad game for Hemmer.)

Nilsson Gagner Kotalik (The line was pretty decent. Not their best game that's for sure. I liked Gagner. He tries to be bigger than he is. He just really needs to shoot more. Nilsson disappeared at the middle of the 3rd. MacT must not have been liking his jib. Kotalik scores the first Oiler goal of the night with a little luck from the puck fairy. He had 7 shots on goal and won both faceoffs he took. MacT might make him a center.)

Reddox Cogliano Pisani (I thought that in the 1st half that this line looked good. But then they would get scored on. Reddox tried hard but did nothing. Cogliano looked good but also did not much. Pisani was probably the best on this line. He had 1 shot.)

Moreau Brodziak Penner (This line was also a non factor tonight. Moreau didn't lead this team like a captain should. (Need New Captain) Brodziak was ok. He had 1 shot and was *team best* 58% on the faceoffs. Penner was decent tonight. He maybe should have had a shot with the 1st line for a bit on the PP. Just for shits and giggles.)

Souray Staios (They played good. Staios finished the game +1 and had 2 shots and 3 hits. Souray was a hitting machine tonight as he had 5 hits and played 29:20.)

Gilbert Grebeshkov (They were ok. Not great like they have been but not bad. Gilbert did block 3 shots tonight. One of them was off the ass. Grebs only really had 2 shots but otherwise made no real big mistakes.)

Strudwick Smid (Oh boy. They stunk it up today. Strudwick was beat on the 1st goal by the quick speed of Lombardi. And he just looked lost for the entire game. Same with Smid. 2 hits. That's it. Where was the spaz?)

Roloson (Definitely not his best game. He sure didn't look sharp at all. Maybe all the playing time is finally getting to him? Does JDD play tomorrow? Doubt it...)

-------------

FINAL SCORE

Edmonton Oilers -2
Phoenix Coyotes - 3

-------------

BEERS

Ales Hemsky - Hemmer was good tonight. When he tried that is. He really needs to put in a full game no matter how frustrated he gets with his linemates. He was mind blowing at times tonight. He scores a beauty of a goal and picks up an assist. He was the best forward for hitting and that says something about these Oilers. For a good game today, have a nice cold frosty Hemmer. Cheers!

Sheldon Souray - The man was great tonight. His hitting was hard and well timed. He played a pretty good defensive game and he played a ton. He did fire 5 shots but only 1 actually hit the net. Shelly was a leader tonight and he deserves a frosty. Cheers!

Ales Kotalik - The other Ales is looking more fit now that he has been here for awhile. He doesn't seem as winded anymore. He scores a huge goal to get the rally going and manages to get bumped back up to the #1 unit. Score every game and we can drink a lot together. Budweiser? Cheers!

Honorable Mentions - Steve Staios (Steady Steve played a solid game. Sometimes the pace gets out of his hands but tonight he did well.)

-------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Can you guys actually lose a bigger game? Good lord guys. That was the Coyotes. An easy win. Or so we thought I guess. I figure that the fans (and me) are maybe expecting to much out of you guys. I am one of the glass half full guys and even I am thinking it's half empty now. The Ducks are tomorrow. Will the real Oilers show up please? Boooooooooooo!

Ethan Moreau - A captain should be a guy that can take a team and help them go to the promise land. He should be able lead the team into battle. He should be able to provide a spark somehow. Ethan Moreau. You let the team down. Am I being too harsh? I don't think so. I think we need a new captain. For a where was Chopper type of game. Boooooooo!

--------------

That was a BS game. It was boring for the 1st half. The Oilers waited way too long before trying to score. Now they are in 10th. Wow! Way to push for the playoffs. We are starting to act like the fLames. And that's pretty gay.

See you all tomorrow. Duck hunting season is open. The limit: 25 (get it?)
