Rajala and Cornet Continue Assault on ECHL

Once again this dynamic duo of Oilers prospects Toni Rajala and Philippe Cornet light up the oppositions goalie.

Both players finished the night with 3 points each. Cornet scored 2 goals and had an assist, while Rajala had 2 assists and a goal.

Since joining the Stockton Thunder they have been excellent. They have really helped make this Thunder team a high scoring group and are currently on a push for 1st place.

Rajala sits with 9 goals and 11 assists for 20 points so far this season. Cornet isn't much farther behind with 8 goals and 10 assists for 18 points. Coach Thomas can't be happier to have those two on his roster.

On one hand, having the kid line demoted to play with the OKC Barons was terrible for Cornet and Rajala. Some guys had to be sent to Stockton. However, this couldn't have worked out better. The confidence level on these two guys will be an asset if, and when, they get recalled to Oklahoma City in the near future.

Big question is, can this success they are having translate to the AHL game?

On a side note, new/old Thunder player Cameron Abney who was just recently returned to Stockton also scored tonight. His hands aren't just for punching people. Deep down inside that rough exterior is a goal scorer. OK, so that's not entirely true. But it was sweet to hear Abney finally scored his first goal of the season.

Another Oilers prospect is creating a buzz in California too. Goaltender Tyler Bunz again played lights out. He was 1st star of the game and has been solid most nights he starts. Nice to see the kid is developing down there. Hard to believe in a few years he could be the Oilers starting goalie.

Until next time... GO THUNDER!!!

Toni Rajala Is Runner Up

It was announced today that Edmonton Oilers prospect Toni Rajala was named runner up for ECHL Player of the Week.

He's produced 7 points in 3 games with the Stockton Thunder. He's having himself a nice start to the season. Let's hope he can continue what he's started.

And The Thunder Rolls... Players Assigned Today

The Oklahoma City Barons have announced that Philippe Cornet and Toni Rajala have been sent down to the Stockton Thunder this morning.

While I'm not rat all surprised Rajala was sent down (He's just turned pro and Stockton would be a great experience for him), I am very surprised they sent Cornet to the ECHL.

Cornet had a great season last year with the OKC Barons. He scored 24 goals. He's played the last two seasons with the Barons and was even an AHL All Star last year. There has to be more to this story. But whatever it is, the Stockton Thunder just gained a heck of a player.

The Barons also lent defenceman Tiegan Zahn to the Thunder as well.

The NHL Lockout Provides Oklahoma City With A Boost

Oklahoma City
Everyone knows that with the lingering NHL lockout that's going on, the Edmonton Oilers have sent down a couple of their young stars to Oklahoma City to play with the Barons.

Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Justin Schultz, Anton Lander and when ready and healed, Taylor Hall are going to be in the OKC Barons lineup.

This is a once in a lifetime (probably not now with Bettman still in charge) opportunity for the people of Oklahoma City to come out and watch some very good NHL talent play right in their own back yard.

Jordan Eberle was a Lady Byng finalist this year. He piled up the numbers while playing a gentleman's game. He's classy through and though. To have him around your community is something to cherish and embrace. He's a great ambassador of the game.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was a finalist for the Calder trophy which is awarded to the NHL's top rookie. Some say he should have won. Who better to be a part of your hockey club to show what hard work really is than RNH? His work ethic will rub off on the rest.

When he's ready to play again in a couple of weeks, Taylor Hall is going to bring leadership to the team like they have never seen before. He oozes a winning attitude and no doubt, he will help bring the team to new heights in their quest to winning the Calder Cup.

Let's not forget the fact they still have Oilers prospect Magnus Paajarvi on the team. He's a year older and another year wiser. I'm expecting a big year from him too before he can make the jump to the Oilers.

Oklahoma City is extremely lucky to be getting these guys. Coach Nelson was given an NHL top line to have at his disposal. I can guarantee he isn't going to squander this. You can hear it in his voice, he's excited.
Not only are the OKC Barons going to flourish because of the NHL lockout, so will the ECHL affiliate, the Stockton Thunder. With the Barons gaining a few new players, that means they are taking spots from guys up there. Those guys will go down to Stockton until a spot becomes available with the Barons.

Goaltender Tyler Bunz and at least 3 other players will be sent to the Stockton to play in the ECHL with the Thunder. It could even be more.

The ripple effect has begun. Enjoy this Oklahoma City, it won't last forever.

EdmontonOilers.com Is Now iPhone And iPad Friendly

I tried watching the Joey Moss cup the other day on my iPhone and it wouldn't play the video. I was pretty sad about this. Until today...

EdmontonOilers.com is now iPhone and iPad friendly. You can watch the videos and they now have an app for your phone or iPad. Simple to use and very user friendly. I can't thank the Oilers enough for doing what they had to do to make this happen. Our lives just got easier.

**THERE IS NOT AN APP IN THE APPLE APP STORE YET** Go to EdmontonOilers.com to get the mobile iPhone version.

All we need now is an Oklahoma City Barons app. FYI, there is a Stockton Thunder app for the iPhone.

Stockton Arena Review by StadiumJourney.com

I was sent an email a little while ago (I forgot about it) from a website that does arena reviews. Paul Swaney, the president and co-founder of StadiumJourney.com asked me to check it out and tell him what I thought. Well...

I loved his review on the Stockton arena. The Edmonton Oilers ECHL team, the Stockton Thunder call this place home for a good part of the year.

Stadium Journey rates everything that involves the arena and location. From the neighbourhood the arena is in, to the food and beverages that they serve, to how good the fans are.

The Stockton arena's highest rating was a 5 out of 5 for the Return of Investment category. They loved the value you get when buying a ticket. They loved that this is very much a family friendly place to take your children.

The lowest rating the arena was given? A 2 out of 5 in the Extras category. Other than the cheesy stuff, they found the puck toss to be entertaining. It's a start, but that definitely needs to be better.

I'd recommend that you should read this review.

The History of the Stockton Thunder / #StkThunder

Since 2005, the Stockton Thunder has built a legacy on the strength of capturing the hockey imagination, passion and attention of California’s Central Valley sports landscape. For the first time in Thunder history, playoff hockey stretched into the Conference Finals as the Thunder advanced to the third round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs in 2010 – falling six wins shy of a Kelly Cup championship. Such historical highlights have also included Thunder fans boosting a streak of leading the league in attendance for four straight seasons – a feat only accomplished one other time in league history (Florida – 2000-05) and hosting the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game, a featured ECHL contest during the league’s 20th Anniversary season that was attended by more than 7,000 fans at Stockton Arena.

In addition to the new relationship with Worcester and San Jose, a current affiliation with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers and an influx of free-agent talent has taken the Thunder to four straight consecutive Kelly Cup Playoff appearances in 2007-10, while seven players have moved on from Stockton in the last four years to make their debut in the National Hockey League. It is a union of captivating entertainment and an electrifying team that continue to pave the way for bigger heights in 2010-11 for the Central Valley.

Click below for the full story on the history of the Thunder, a complete listing of the team’s records and an all-time roster.

THUNDER IN “THE SHOW”

Devan Dubnyk (G)
Years with Stockton: 1 (2006-07)
Made NHL debut (with Edmonton): Nov. 28, 2009 (at Vancouver)

Etching his name numerous times in the record books is one way to make a presence in Stockton. Another is to cover the net with a towering 6-foot-6, 194-pound frame. One of the first, showcased prospects to come to the Thunder just months after the Oilers joined as an affiliation, goaltender and fan favorite Devan Dubnyk thrilled Thunder fans in the 2006-07 season with sparkling save after save, igniting chants of “Dooob” each time the 20-year old knocked away a threatening scoring chance. A first round draft pick (14th overall) of the Oilers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Dubnyk set Thunder single-season records for wins (24), minutes played (2,529), lowest goals-against-average (2.56) and save percentage (.921) in 2006-07, helping guide the team to their first Kelly Cup Playoff berth in team history. He earned a spot on the National Conference team at the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game and turned his storybook rookie season into two solid years with the Springfield Falcons thereafter. An injury to Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin paved the way for Dubnyk’s first call-up to the NHL in November 2009 and the Oilers fell behind the Vancouver Canucks, 4-0 in a nationally-televised game at GM Place on Nov. 28, Dubnyk was summoned into the game for his NHL debut. He turned in a 21-save effort on “Hockey Night In Canada” to become the seventh player in Thunder history to make his NHL debut.

Colin McDonald (RW)
Years with Stockton: 1 (2008-09)
Made NHL debut (with Edmonton): Nov. 27, 2009 (vs. San Jose)

Stockton proved to be a key stop for Colin McDonald’s rise through the Oilers farm system as a top prospect in 2008-09 after his selection as a second round draft pick by Edmonton in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. A thick, 6-foot-3 and 205-pound forward gifted with speed, a rocket snap shot and keen playmaking vision, McDonald was sent the way of the Thunder in November 2008 from the Springfield Falcons and didn’t take long to make an impact, dishing out two assists in three games. Springfield then summoned for his services and finished with 10 goals and 22 points (10g-12a) in 77 AHL games. McDonald finally earned “the call” to the NHL early in the 2009-10 season and debuted on a line with former Thunder center Ryan O’Marra with the Oilers at Rexall Place on Nov. 27 against the San Jose Sharks. He would follow up the red-letter night with another one just 24 hours later, when he scored his first NHL goal (assist to O’Marra) against Vancouver Canucks star netminder Roberto Luongo at GM Place.

Ryan O’Marra (C)
Years with Stockton: 1 (2007-08)
Made NHL debut (with Edmonton): Nov. 10, 2009 (at Ottawa)

Gifted with hands, speed, fearlessness and playmaking ability, center Ryan O’Marra began his official journey to the NHL with the Thunder in the infancy of the 2007-08 season, providing a glimpse of his potential with 20 points (11g-9a) in 24 ECHL games before his recall to Springfield in December, coincidentally, when he was named to the ECHL All-Star Game as a member of the National Conference. He returned for the Kelly Cup Playoffs and proved to be a handful for the eventual National Conference champ Las Vegas Wranglers with nine points (2g-7a) in six games. Originally selected by the New York Islanders in the first round (15th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, part of his intrigue was his acquisition by the Oilers on February 27, 2007 with Robert Nilsson and another first round draft pick for longtime NHL veteran Ryan Smyth. After 62 games in a full AHL season in 2008-09 with Springfield, O’Marra got the long-waited “call” in 2009-10 and first suited up for the Oilers on November 10 at Scotiabank Place against the Ottawa Senators in his home province of Ontario.

Troy Bodie (RW)
Years with Stockton: 1 (2006-07)
Made NHL debut (with Anaheim): Jan. 16, 2009 (at Pittsburgh)

A big-league sized force at 6-foot-4 and 219 pounds, blessed with wheels and containing the willingness to drop the gloves for his opponents, right wing Troy Bodie began his ascension to the NHL level as a member of the Thunder in 2006-07, wearing out ECHL opponents with 21 goals, 38 points (21g-17a) and 80 penalty minutes in just 46 games while weaving a “playmaker” assist in the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Boise. Drafted in the 9th round by the Oilers in 2003, Bodie spent the entire 2007-08 season in the AHL with Springfield before signing an NHL contract with the Anaheim Ducks for 2008-09, slating his start for Iowa of the AHL. Bodie emerged with the big club against the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 16 at Mellon Arena and went on to suit up in four games for the Ducks. Bodie was a member of the Ducks playoff roster, who fell one win shy of reaching the Western Conference Finals in a seven-game, second round loss to Detroit.

Liam Reddox (LW)
Years with Stockton: 1 (2006-07)
Made NHL debut: Dec. 7, 2007 (vs. St. Louis)

A 4th round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2004, Reddox parlayed a clutch first playoff round series against the Idaho Steelheads with a three-point effort (2g-1a), earning a spot with the AHL’s Springfield Falcons in 2007-08. The 5-foot-10, skilled and feisty forward finished the 06-07 year on-fire with a 7-game scoring streak, posting 11 points (4g-7a) in that stretch. After a strong start at the AHL level with the Springfield Falcons, Reddox became the second player in Thunder history to play in the NHL, making his debut with the Edmonton Oilers on December 7, 2007 against the St. Louis Blues. Reddox, who would score 12 points (5g-7a) for the Oilers the following year, suited up in 46 games for Edmonton in 2008-09, scoring his first NHL goal against the Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 15, 2008.

Tim Sestito (C)
Years with Stockton: 1 (2006-07)
Made NHL debut: Nov. 27, 2008 (vs. Los Angeles)

Always popular in the dressing room for his work ethic and attitude, budding forward Tim Sestito was one of the linchpins to the Thunder success in 2006-07, ranking second on the club with 132 penalty minutes while scoring 26 points (13g-13a). Sestito scored three points (2g-1a) in six Kelly Cup Playoff games, including a shorthanded game-winner in the first playoff contest in Thunder history – a 4-3 victory at Idaho. Sestito made his full-time graduation to the AHL level the following season in Springfield and was awarded the captain’s “C” on his jersey at the beginning of the 2008-09 season, finally breaking through the NHL ribbon at Rexall Place on November 27 by making his NHL debut against the Los Angeles Kings.

Bryan Young
Years with Stockton: 1 (2006-07)
Made NHL debut: Mar. 9, 2007 (at Anaheim)

Bryan Young made his way to the top of the NHL’s farm system ladder in freakishly quick fashion – a rarity for a minor league hockey player, Young carved his path from the ECHL to the NHL in the same year. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound soft-spoken defenseman was drafted in the 5th round by the Oilers in 2004 and suited up in 17 games for the Thunder in 2006-07. Despite only posting four assists from the blueline, it was his signature rugged, hard-hitting defensive style that was meant to be refined during his stay in Stockton and a handful of highlight-reel open ice hits sent Thunder fans, teammates and opponents in awe. Young became the first former Thunder player to make his NHL debut – suiting up for the Oilers on March 9, 2007 at Anaheim. Young went onto appear in 17 games for the Oilers in the next two seasons.

Stockton Thunder, Not So Great Eight / A Game Recap / #StkThunder

FINAL STATS: Box score

ANCHORAGE – Veteran Wes Goldie collected a hat trick, Brian Swanson scored twice and the Alaska Aces used five power-play goals to defeat the Stockton Thunder (12-6-4, 28 points), 8-3, before 3,016 fans at Sullivan Arena on Wednesday night.

The Thunder, who took just their second road defeat in regulation this year (6-2-2) and still maintained a first place tie in the Pacific Division with Las Vegas, lost an early 1-0 lead which turned into a four-goal deficit in the first period, when the Aces scored four times on a five-minute major power-play.

Mark Arcobello paced the
Thunder offense with a
career-high three points (2g-1a)
Mark Arcobello scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Thunder in scoring. Anthony Aiello added a power-play goal in the third period. Gerald Coleman picked up the win for Alaska with 29 saves in net.

Arcobello broke the scoreless tie just 4:25 into the game with a shorthanded goal after stripping the Alaska defenseman Steve Ward at center ice, racing on a breakaway and beating Coleman with a forehand to the glove side.

Alaska answered 58 seconds later with Ethan Cox’s turnaround shot that beat Bryan Pitton to the blocker side from the right circle. The game’s momentum took a sharp turn after Chris Lawrence was handed a five-minute major penalty for boarding, opening the door for a four-goal rally for Alaska in a span of 4:18.

Goldie responded at 11:42 with a backhander from beneath the hash marks, over Pitton for the first power-play goal on a five-minute major and a 2-1 lead for Alaska.

Kory Falite then got a piece of Chad Anderson’s shot from the high slot with 12:53 gone in the period, boosting the Aces lead to 3-1.

Just 57 seconds later, a Bryan Miller wrist shot from the left circle inflated the Aces lead to 4-1, firing his third goal of the season over Pitton’s shoulder.

Swanson buried the final goal of the Alaska power-play, in the slot with 3:10 left in the period for a 5-1 lead.

After replacing Pitton with Garrett Zemlak, the Thunder turned the second period around for a 12-10 shots advantage and cut the deficit to 5-2 when Arcobello scored his second goal of the game, off a relay from Garet Hunt when he beat Coleman with a wrist shot from inside of the right circle.

Just 56 seconds into the final period, Goldie put the Thunder back in a four-goal hole with his second of the game, stashing a backhander from the deep slot after jumping on turnover.

Aiello cut the gap back to three goals at 6-3 when his power-play goal, coming at 4:57, completed an Arcobello feed to the right goal post.

Goldie’s hat trick, on a wraparound to the forehand, put Alaska up 7-3 with 8:39 elapsed after converting a Scott Howes pass at the right circle. Swanson closed the scoring on Alaska’s fifth power-play goal with 4:21 left, finishing Goldie’s pass at the right goal line with a re-direction past Zemlak’s left pad.

Pitton, who was in net for the eventual game-winning goal, took the loss with just eight stops. Zemlak finished with 18 saves in 44 minutes between the pipes.

NOTES: The Thunder scratched Chase Ryan (healthy), Trevor Hunt (healthy), Jim McKenzie (injured reserve), Tyson Sexsmith (injured reserve) and Craig Valette (injured reserve) … Alaska’s five goals in the first period set a Thunder record for most goals scored by an opponent in one period … Alaska finished with a 34-32 shots advantage … the Thunder went 1-for-4 on the power-play … Stockton took just its third loss in regulation at Sullivan Arena dating back to 2007-08, dropping to 8-3-1 in the last 12 games in Anchorage.

Stockton Thunder Prepare For A Battle / Game Preview / #StkThunder

So, the last time both teams met, this happened.

At the tail-end of a 4-0 Thunder walloping of Bakersfield on Nov. 7, the results featured 95 penalty minutes, 27 penalties in total dished out. 17 of them were “emotion” penalties (roughing, fighting, leaving the crease, secondary altercation, misconducts, etc). It’s pretty evident that emotions will be running high. Jim McKenzie confirmed it this morning in a conversation we had, and Matt Thomas is hoping the Thunder will match it throughout the game.

The Thunder are in first place at 11-4-4 (26 points), Bakersfield is nine points behind. The Thunder outscored Bakersfield, 15-2, in the three-game series in November, but the score might be closer than you think tonight.

The Thunder have found their stride again with Bryan Pitton carrying the mail (7-0-1 this year with a 2.26 GAA) and the offense combining for 13 goals in the three-game sweet at Victoria last week. But, we’ll see several gifted and credentialed players inserted into the Condors lineup this evening, for the first time in the series.

They are: Kyle Calder (yes, THE Kyle Calder), recent assigned prospects Kyle Broda and Pete Zingoni, former Springfield Falcon Slava Trukhno, former Manchester Monarch Joe Rullier, and fresh-off-the-I.R.J.D. Corbin and Bobby Robins.

With Jesse Gimblett up in the AHL, that creates a spot for Thomas to dress seven defensemen. He’ll do that, and Trevor Hunt will serve primarily as an extra forward and also create options for penalty killers with fresh legs at the ready, in case that need arises.

Here’s how the lineups are looking for tonight:

THUNDER LINE COMBINATIONS
McKenzie – Lawrence – Watson
Clarke – Bureau – Cameron
G. Hunt – Arcobello – Clair
T. Hunt

THUNDER DEFENSIVE PAIRS
Aiello – Vanoosten
Ringwald – Brodie
Constant – Marcoux

GOALTENDER: Pitton
