My Playoff Picks (2nd Round)

Well folks. I did ok with my picks in the 1st round. The only series I was completely correct on was the Hawks/fLames. Either I'm good a guessing or really lucky but the only series I was completely wrong on was the Ducks/Sharks. So much for my pick of SJ in the finals.

According to the pool that I am in, I managed 8 points out of a possible 16. I need to get the amount of games right. On to round two...

Oilers Jambalaya #4 (Random Thoughts)

Wow!

A lot has changed in the last week or so. MacT is gone. Tambo steps up. Rumors start swirling. Who's leaving next? Oilers have 10th pick overall at this years NHL draft.

Absolute crazy I tell you.

Everyone is talking about who is going to be the next coach here in Oil Country. At this point of the season, who cares? There is a lot of months before the next season starts and the playoffs are just starting. Why are we getting all worked up about nothing? I don't know? Do you?

All I do know... I DON'T WANT MIKE CRAWFORD! Oops. Did I screw up your name Marc? No big deal right? I'll get Alex Hemsky to sign a shirt for you to make up for it. Can you imagine what Hemmer would do if he taps him on the pads and says, "Ok Alex. Your turn." And Hemmer looks at him and cracks him over the head with his stick. "Help me Rolofson", Crawford yells as Roli turns his back and skates away. OMG! That could be terrible for the team. BBMT (Bring Back MacT) jk. Calm down.

-------------

I guess the next "big thing" for the Oilers is the 2009 NHL Draft. The Oilers pick 10th this year for the first time ever. If we picked up Hemsky at 13th, then we should be able to find a guy that is decent. *fingers crossed* I am a believer of picking the best available player for the first two rounds anyways. After that, whatever. Go random. Pick with your gut. There just may be a Zetterberg out there for us.

Here is a look at the top 15 players available from TSN. Anyone of these kids could be an Oiler by next year. Who do you like the best? Don't say Tavares either.

-------------

If the Oilers are going to move forward then I suppose we look at leadership. I am a strong believer that we also need a change in out Captain department. Moreau has done a decent job but this team needs a new direction. Now all season I have said how I would like to see Souray as our C. I still do feel that way, but I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Why not be like Chicago and name Gagner the Captain? It seems to be working for them and if anything we can look at Vancouver and Detroit as examples. They are teams that made a young guy a Captain and built around them for years. Yzerman and Linden. Why not the Oilers? Clearly, Gagner was the one that was most bothered by not making the playoffs. (Souray as well as he wasn't available for comment after the last day.) Give Gagner a shot with the C. I won't make us worse. NNC.

Beers and Jeers #57 (Apr 10/09 vs. Calgary Flames)

I am going to skip most parts of the Beers and Jeers. Mainly because no one cares anymore. (well, I do.) The Oilers played well last night despite the fLames only dressing 15 players. The game had no life and it was strange to watch. The crowd was given a good show though.

FINAL SCORE

Calgary fLames - 1

BEERS

Steve MacIntyre - He was great. He scores the GWG and does it in fashion by crashing the net to score. He had a hit and played what seemed like a lot to me. (11:04 of ice time) He even had some PP time. And the funny part is he really didn't look out of place 5 on 5. Will he be back next year? For playing a hell of a game, have a cold frosty with me. Cheers!

Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers - He was solid. I am not sure why he hasn't played more? I look forward to the future of the Oilers. JDD will be one of our leaders in years to come. Great game JDD. Care for a mug o' beer? Cheers!

Theo Peckham - I like this guy. He seems to be coming along quite nicely. He seems to have a good hockey sense and that will only get better. He helped to carry Chorney for most of the game and only had a few mistakes. But who cares? He did well (4 blocked shots). How about a cold can of Molson? Cheers!

Patrick O'Sullivan - I thought that Sully played a great game. He had a ton of shots and finally scored his 2nd goal with the Oilers. 8 shots. Wow! Great game Sully, I look forward to next year. Have a cold one. Cheers!

Sheldon Souray - Souray also had a great game. He didn't have to play with that edge that he has and his game still worked well. His goal was a bomb and it was nice to see one last one before the season is over. Good game Souray. Beer? Cheers!

Honorable Mentions: Shawn Horcoff (Played well. Three point night and played a good all around game.), Ales Kotalik (scored a nice one timer. The better Ales tonight), Taylor Chorney (Although not an outstanding game, he will be good for the Oil someday soon. Good 1st game ever.)

JEERS

There are none. Yay!

I lIke The Cut Of Your Jib #5

Well folks with the season wrapping up, I look around the dressing room and I see some more Jib Cutters sitting there still. Some will still be here next year so I am not really in a panic to do them right away. But there is one guy who may not be back. He has been a favorite of mine right from the first game I seen/heard of him. He may not contribute like other players do but I don't care, I love his story.

Born: August 8, 1980 in Brock, Saskatchewan
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 250lbs
Position: Left Wing (Oilers), Defense (Minors/Juniors)

In 1997 he started his junior hockey career by playing one game with the Saskatoon Blades. At that time I was hell bent on learning how to play the guitar. The year after that he played in 55 games for the Blades. By the time he "made it" in the NHL, he has fought 180 times. Wow. That's a lot of knuckles to the face.

His story is one that made me like him that much more. I had no idea who the big gnarly looking guy was when the Oilers first claimed him on waivers September 30, 2008. But his "be afraid of no one" attitude is great. And away from the rink he's a nice guy. Funny too.

Steve only played 20 games this year for the Edmonton Oilers. They may be the only 20 games he may ever play in the NHL. But I'm sure he's enjoyed his stay here in Oil Country. He even scored a goal. I cheered so freaking hard. EDIT: He scores #2 against the fLames tonight. It was an even better goal this time. And he played a ton (11:04. Lots for him). He also had 3 shots on goal. That is what he had all season. Great game for Big Mac. Maybe he plays his 22 game tommorow?

Steve, for being such a great ass kicker for this hockey club, we thank you. We needed you this year. You did good. You showed Stortini that there was more to fighting than just tying up a guy and hugging him. You showed us that no matter what, punch him some where and fast. (face/head/ribs/stomach/anywhere that hurts) If you haven't seen this he shows you how to fight.

You showed all of us that dreams can come true.

I like the cut of your jib, you Jib Cutter you!
