Oilers 'Pre-NHL Draf't rumours flying

Can't go to far without hearing a new rumour swirling right now for the NHL during free agent frenzy, 2014 NHL Entry Draft and apparently a good time trade week.

I just wanted to touch on some possible trade situations that are being discussed or looked at. Right now the Oilers still covet a Top 6 Center and a Top 2 defence man. The draft will answer 1 of the 2 immediately. I know your saying 'what?' Yes, Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart and/or Leon Draisaitl will be likely to good to be sent back to their CHL team. Please don't give me the 'they have to earn it first' lecture. Of course they have to earn it and they will. All I am saying is, I believe they are all ready for the jump, they are that good right now. Maybe Leon could need 1 more year but not likely.

So having said that, the Oilers could have potential interest in Vincent Lecavalier as a temporary second line center to give them a year or two before finishing off the last time on the third line.

Hall/Nugent-Hopkins/Eberle
Perron/Lecavalier/Yakupov
Would that work? Do you hate the idea of a slower Vincent playing for the Oilers? Willing to trade for his salary and give up Klefbom? Think he is washed up? I actually don't mind this idea but would be a possible solution if they strike out at Stastsny.

Sounding like Edmonton has 5 impending trade possibilities but two are based on trading the pick. This will be a interesting next 24 hours. Let the good times roll! The Oilers are definitely in the mix on almost anything they can and keeping their hands on as much as possible.

In the meantime Oiler fans, enjoy the last night before the Draft. It's year 5 of the rebuild coming up. Oilers plan on improving so maybe one last ride upon the good ship Koolaid?

Questions & more Questions in "Oilerland" pt 2 LADISLAV SMID

As mentioned in pt 1,  between the MSM of TV and Radio, along with all our Oiler bloggers on the Internet and fans on twitter and Facebook, the world of hockey has some real crazy talk happening out there. Sure some stuff sounds quite interesting and plausible but some stuff does not even make sense. Sometimes it is simple deduction in figuring out what is ludicrous or what has possibility.

When trying to wade through the mud of the dirty waters of rumours and speculation, all you have to do is consider the few facts in front of you. When a team is over the cap, very low % of a chance that a team in that standing will trade for a player who has a high salary. It is unlikely a team will trade for a player unless they believe they can help their organization especially at the cost it takes. All those small details need to be figured out.

The great insiders of the game don't just have a GUY, they have people who know or have heard that people are talking. They then do simple deduction of what are the different possibilities and demise from that conversation. After all that is done, they throw out that rumour possibility and then check out the reaction from the players, agents and the NHL clubs. Depending on what they hear, they either move forward or pull back off of the rumour. Very seldom, the great insiders know actual facts from directly within until it looks like it is almost all but over and the contract is all but signed.

Ladislav Smid;

Smid has been speculated to be traded several times since he arrived in the Chris Pronger trade to Anaheim. He was considered a 'gem' yet Smid has always been what he is today with the exception he is bigger, stronger, and more mature.Smid is what every team is looking for. The truth is, he fits perfect into that #4 slot on the second defence pairing for even the best of teams. Don't believe me, just ask some GM's, coaches, players and  play by play or colour broadcasters.

Awhile back the team that sought him out the hardest that was confirmed was Nashville. What was the best being offered for him then? Johnathan Blum. What? Yes, and several Oilers fans wanted it to happen. At his cap, his term, his love for the city and being with a woman from Edmonton makes him a player that Edmonton would be crazy to trade. The only way he moves out of Edmonton is , if a solid player is coming back to put into a 1 or 2 spot in our roster,

Unfortunately for Smid, he has been put into a top defence pairing role and playing behind his minutes against the other teams best offensive players and sometimes people are judging his play on that. Smid, has been a warrior for us and removing him from this roster would be a big mistake IMO.

There have been lots of inquiries into Smid this past off season but it is appearing more and more like MacT likes what he sees or at least for now. Some believe MacT is not a big believer in Smid but I don't see it. I think he knows what he believes and Dallas Eakins will love this guy. My only hope is Dallas Eakins uses him properly in his role and does not continue to have him playing to far over his head.

Likely his name will continue to be put out there, but unless your getting a Braydon Coburn or better, it is not worth the gamble to let such a good player go. Edmonton has developed and invested in Smid for years and when he is finally a strong commodity we sell him off? Not this time folks, Smid is mostly home grown, tried and tested in Oiler silks and will likely continue to be around for a few more years yet.

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

- Who's Out? Who's in? Things get interesting. Nilsson and Pisani are the two that are sitting tonight. Why? I don't know. But they are. Smid and Staios were skating today, so that's a good sign. Chorney and Plante are still in lineup tonight.

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Alex Plante - It wasn't so much a bad timing penalty as it was more of a bad luck penalty. He went to clear it in the Oilers zone. Just as he was releasing, the puck rolled and went off his stick a little high and it went over the glass. Thankfully the Oilers killed it off. It's hard to blame the kid for that penalty. Complete accident.

------------------

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - The man posted a shutout. WoOoOoOoO! Good for him. Some where Robin Brownlee is yelling, "I told you so!" at all the naysayers. Myself included. JDD was rock solid all night. Lucky a few times but overall, the best player on the ice. Great job Jeff. It's Miller Time. Cheers!

Sam Gagner - Is there anything he can't so? *swoon* Gagner continues he late season point streak. Let's be honest. Do you want 1st half Penner or 2nd half Gagner leading your team into the playoffs? You chose Gagner too? He had 3 shots, 2 hits and an assist on the winning goal. Good game little guy. Here's a frosty mug of Bud. Mmmm. Cheers!

Ryan Potulny - He scores the winning goal with 16.1 seconds left. Who the hell discarded him from their roster like he was a spare part? Oh right, the Flyers did. I bet that felt good for him? He had 3 shots, 2 hits, 2 blocked shots, 2 takeaways and was 5W-3L for 63% on faceoffs and a partridge in a pear tree. What? Too late for Christmas jokes? Great game Ryan. You impress me every game you play. How about a Kokanee? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Alex Plante (I like this kid. He plays tough and takes no guff. He even wanted a piece of Carcillo and he declined. I'm glad we are getting a look at him. Can we stop asking for Peckham all the time?), Tom Gilbert (I really liked him tonight. This may have been the toughest that I have ever seen him play. Serious.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He had a team high 3 takeaways. How does he do it? He was creamed and looked hurt. He came back and played but we will cross the fingers it's nothing like a long term nagging type of injury.), Everyone else was pretty good as well. No one sucked. O'Sullivan and Cogliano each had 4 shots for a team lead.

JEERS

None - I know... it's strange for me too.

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - 2 wins in a row. Cool. But don't forget to keep your eyes on the prize. But seriously. The Oilers were good tonight. At times the Flyers killed them, yet they didn't get scored on. It was nice to see the team play as a team.

Paq Twinn - *coming soon*
